Superintendent of Public
Works Mike Boyle said the city's
new waterplant should go
online in 2009-10. The city con-
tinues to plan for a 4 million gal-
lon per day (gpd) waterplant, to
replace its 40-year-old 1 million
gpd plant.-Testing should con-
tinue for about 18 months, with
construction taking 24 months,

placing the waterplant's start
date in 2010. The modular,
reverse osmosis modular
plant is expected to cost some
$35.7 million. The city is cur-
rently seeking that funding, in
the form of grants and loans.
RUS funding will require that
the "core city" be serviced first,
before any new construction
areas. Water customers can
expect a rate increase in the

foreseeable future as well.
Commissioners voted Dec.
14 to borrow $2 million from a
consortium of local banks to get
the project moving. New rates
will be identified later. Existing
customers will only pay for the
portion of the new plant that
will benefit them.
The resolution to borrow the
initial $2 million passed 3-1 with

FHP seeking

crash facts

The Florida Highway Patrol
is seeking a.inyone with infor-
mation on a traffic crash that
killed a 23-year-old LaBelle
man on Friday, December 22.
According to the FHP report,
Simon V. Clicerio of LaBelle
was riding a Huffy bicycle
southbound on SR 29 some 48
feet north of Sams Lane. The
crash occurred at approximate-
ly 6:25 p.m. Witnesses reported
that Mr. Clicerio attempted to
cross the northbound lane of
SR 29, immediately into the
path of a vehicle believed to be
a black Ford pick up truck. The
truck impacted the right side of
the bicycle, ejecting the rider

George Anderson could be
called the macadamia nut man.
However, he likes to call himself a
backyard breeder enthusiast. He
hopes to put LaBelle on the map
as the macadamia nut capital of .. '-
the world, eventually replacing
citrus with macadamias. With all
the talk about citrus decreasing :
due to citrus canker and now ..
greening this could be a great
avenue for citrus farmers or any-
one with a little bit of land. He
started growing the trees ten years

The Community Traffic
Safety Team is currently focus-
ing on child passenger safety.
As part of this focus, the
Hendry-Glades Health Depart-

Wal-mart is one

step closer now

By Patty Brant
The LaBelle City Commis-
sion has unanimously
approved an ordinance chang-
ing the land use designation
for Moore Groves from agricul-
ture to commercial. The 80
acre parcel is the proposed
Wal-mart site on SR 80W. The
action took place at the Dec.
14 city commission meeting.
Also, "Old Groves," situat-
ed just east and south east of
Plant World, was approved
from ag to mixed use, allow-
ing four units per acre for sin-
gle, milti-family and commer-
cial use of the 335-acre site.
Commissioner Dave Lyons
asked the number of rooftops
- 1,200 total units. The city is
currently reviewing the devel-
oper's PUD application, and

all should be available in
2009.
The commissioners also
considered allowing Semi-
nole Court Senior Housing, at
the southeast corner of
Riverview and Seminole Ave.,
to change from single family
residential medium density to
multi-family residential. The
2.3 acres is to be the site of 48
units. City Planner Shelly
Johnson recommended the
PUD because the city can set
guidelines. The commission
tabled the question till' its Jan-
uary 11 meeting.

because the University of Florida
couldn't help him with his
research on macadamia trees. He
has been experimenting with
macadamia nut trees on his ten
acre farm on A. Rd. to find out
which trees produce the biggest
and best macadamia nuts. He has
28 varieties of macadamia trees
and has cross bred them until he
has designed some very plentiful
trees. The trees he has patented
so far are the A-4 and the A-16. He
will soon be patenting two more
trees; the Queen Anne and the
Princess Anne named after his
wife. The nuts are as large as ping
pong balls or quarters.
According to Mr. Anderson,
nine point one million
macadamias are imported to the
US every year from Austrailia,
Africa and Hawaii making the
nuts very expensive. The nuts are
also expensive because they are
being produced on expensive
land in Hawaii. There are also not
enough nuts in production today.
Macadamias are currently going
for $5 per lb. and $8-10 per pound
for high grade nuts. The
macadamia nut was the very last
nut put on the market. His trees
are producing such large nuts that
a specific company is having to
reinvent one of its tools to make it
large enough for his macadamias.
The trees are very suitable for
Florida farmland. Actually, Florida
has much better conditions than
most places because we have

more rainfall. They grow in very
acid ground. George spends $90 a
month for acid and fertilizer on
his ten acre farm and uses a 15-
gallon can of sulfuric acid.
Right now Australia is the #1
producer of macadamias. Africa
is #2 and Hawaii is #3.
Mr. Anderson said, "In our
society we need to take into con-
sideration the factor of feeding
our people in case of emergency
instead of importing goods from
other places."
Macadamias are very healthy
nuts full of the "good fat" or
mono saturated fat. It attacks the
fat in arteries and cleans them
out. Therefore, McCall bird own-
ers are buying the shells because
McCall's receive little or no exer-
cise so it is a great diet for them.
The peak harvest time or sea-
son is mid August to December or
January. The A-4 and A-16 peak
harvest time or season runs from
September to the end of January.
It is important to plant the trees
15 ft. apart so they have enough
room to grow. Mr. Anderson has
not used an ounce of insecticides
on the trees in the ten years he has
been growing them. He has only
used pesticide on the ground
beneath the tree to keep the grass
from growing too high. A five year
old tree will produce 100 pounds
of nuts per year.
Last October, an article about
Mr. Anderson was written. That
article produced 120 calls. Out of
120 calls, he was only able to call
the first 20 back and sold all his
trees, which speaks to the
demand for the trees. Mr. Ander-
son refuses to sell to big business-

deferred making plans for the
old Barron House property on
SR 80 to get input from the sur-
rounding residents on how to
best fit into the neighborhood.
The property has been a land-
mark for residents and travelers
alike for decades. Mitch Hutch-
craft of BBG made the
announcement at the Dec. 14
city commission meeting. He
then updated plans for the Paul
property. The Development of
Regional Importance (DRI) has
been submitted to the Depart-
ment of Community Affairs, he
said, and the company is going
over the finer points of its plan.
He expects that process to take
another two to six months.
Mr. Hutchcraft explained his
company plans Todprotect the
history of the area and provide
economic and recreational
opportunities to improve the
quality of life. It is working on
designing a park and is consid-
ering a WMCA-type facility pos-
sibly adjacent to the proposed
new high school site. BBG also
is concerned about helping to
revitalize the downtown area.

es and wants to keep the small
farmer in business so 1,000 trees
is the biggest order Mr. Anderson
allows. Mr. Anderson produced
1,000 lbs. of nuts last year and
5,000 lbs. this year. He said each
tree doubles in production every
year.
The beauty of the nut is that
everything is useful. The shell is
used to make charcoal in Hawaii,
the nuts are healthy to eat and
lower cholesterol. The husk is
used for fertilizer and the oil is
good to eat on salads or used as
sun block because it produces 80
percent UV protection that actual-
ly repairs damaged skin.
Mr. Anderson gives four rea-
sons why the macadamia tree is
such a great product.
#1-It is a cash crop where you
time the market; the market does-
n't time you.
#2-It gives a good return in the
third year in comparison to seven
years for citrus.
#3-No insecticides are neces-
sary and it's non labor intensive.
#4-It's economical to fertilize;
Requires no insecticides.
Mr. Anderson is currently
working on a natural herbicide for
the grass around the bottom of
the tree so the trees can be grown
completely organically.
The biggest problem Mr.
Anderson says, are squirrels, but
that can be eliminated by building
a barrier wall or in his case, a 15 ft.
deep ditch around his entire prop-
erty.
The nuts literally pick them-
selves by falling off the trees and
cracking to let you know that they
are ready. He uses anti-stress on

The company hopes to provide
a full range of housing including
workforce housing and mixed
use "villages," which co-mingles
residential and commercial
properties. BBG will set a stan-
dard of quality, he promised.
The development will share
some infrastructure with the
city, such as the waterplant cur-
rently being planned by the city.
The bulk of the preliminary
development for the South
LaBelle Village, the first to be
planned for the Paul property,
should be in 2009-10 with retail
sales in 2010. According to Mr.
Hutchcraft, the economic
impact of the first "village,"
should be approximately $28.4
million over 20 years to the city
and $4.8 million with the school
district. $90 million with the
county. ".
Average economic output is
expected to be $123 million, $45
million in salaries.
The educational site will
include an Edison College cam-
pus, high school, elementary
school and vo-tech with a utility
parcel and park adjacent. All will
have a "Main Street" environ-
ment with walking paths and
lakes.
Mr. Hutchcraft characterized

his small trees before a big freeze
to get them through.
The A-4 is not as prone to wind
damage as some of the other vari-
eties of trees and it produces well.
Mr. Anderson also grows
other exotic trees such as the
Merenga and the edible hibiscus
tree which he eats to get rid of
wrinkles and fine lines.
He says in order to get an agri-
cultural tax exemption from the
state one must have 50 trees on
their property. But one can plant
180 trees per acre. Therefore,
you don't have to have 20 or
more acres to produce this crop.
You can simply be a small land
owner.
The A-4 and the A-16 are third
year producers where minimal
equipment is needed. Mr. Ander-
son currently uses a tool that
looks like a slinky to pick up the
nuts off the ground but will be
using a harvesting machine this
coming year because he is pro-
ducing too much for it to be done
manually. An injector is also
needed for fertilizing. He sells the
trees for $30-$35 per tree. Mr.
Anderson goes through about a
bag of fertilizer per month. He
uses two different types depend-
ing on the season. He waters
them twice a day and leaves the
trees in full sun.
He is currently selling to small
farmers who want to get started
with a great cash crop and bird
owners/breeders. He hopes to
eventually sell to health food
stores, candy bar and cookie
makers and cosmetic compa-
nies. The opportunities are end-
less.

the development as a "long term
opportunity" for the city.
Commissioner Paul Puletti
listened to the presentation,
then questioned if an elemen-
tary school could precede home
sales, thinking a school would
be needed before that. Mr.
Hutchcraft said it may be possi-
ble when the Helms Road exten-
sion is completed and said BBG
is continuing consulting with
Superintendent of Schools Tom
Conner.
He also said the company will
be seeking impact fee credits.
Commissioner Puletti also
asked if an athletic fields might
be part of the plan. Mr. Hutch-
craft said community parks are
very much a part of their plan
including "active" parks for bas-
ketball, football, soccer and pos-
sibly a swimming pool. A golf
course accessible to the public
is also- possible, with daily
access fees. He said he looks for-
ward to coordinating recreation
plans with the city.
Early construction will proba-
bly be high-end second homes
for retirees, he noted. BBT is
also continuing to work on the
Murphy's Landing development
west of LaBelle, currently doing
a fiscal impact study, and will
submit the DRI in 2007.

Hendry EMS facing allegations by fired employees

By Ideybis Gonzalez
A former employee of the
Hendry County EMS and Fire Res-
cue Department is claiming resi-
dents are not getting the services
they require from the county
because it is short-staffed.
Paris Fajardo, who until this
month was a paramedic for the
.county, alleges that the depart-
ment is not meeting its staffing
requirements, putting residents in
danger of not getting proper med-
ical attention during emergencies.
County representatives, mean-
while, defend themselves from
the accusations, adding that an
incident earlier this month forced
several of its employees to resign
or be terminated. The department
said it is working to get a full staff
back on the road.
According to Public Safety
Director Randy Bengston, several
of his employees were caught
lying, which prompted the man-
power shortage. By his own
admission, the department was
;struggling for a while.

"There are not enough para-
medics," said Mr. Bengston earlier
this week by telephone. While
normally a fully staffed agency
would have 15 paramedics pro-
viding coverage in the Clewiston
area, Mr. Bengston said he now
has 12.
"We are currently running
short-staffed," said the director.
Mr. Fajardo, though, claims
that there are only nine para-
medics on the road, a dangerous-
ly low number. Even so, Mr.
Bengston said the department is
in the process of hiring three
more'paramedics, one scheduled
to start by the end of the year.
Two paramedics lost their job
.after an incident earlier this
month, according to Mr. Fajardo.
Mr. Fajardo was given the option
to resign or be terminated after
the department accused him and
several other paramedics of going
on a cruise together.
Because they had failed to
properly notify their supervisors,
and may have disrupted services
that day, those unwilling to name

who went on the cruise were rep-
rimanded or fired, according to
Mr. Fajardo.
He accused his supervisors of
wrongfully asking him to resign.
"I do not agree that I should
say what I or my peers do in their
personal time," said Mr. Fajardo in
a letter to the county. "I feel that I
was discriminated even after I
was forced to resign from my
position as paramedic."
According to Mr. Fajardo, his
former supervisors called the
Montura Fire Department to make
sure that, as an area served by the
county, Mr. Fajardo would not
work in the that area.
He blames management for
the department's troubles even
before the incident and said it had
been operating with too few para-
medics for weeks.
"We are in need of para-
medics, but they're making a big
deal out of little issues that had
nothing to do with our job," Mr;.
Fajardo said.
Traditionally, with lower pay
and benefits, sometimes outdated

facilities and equipment and long
hours, finding suitable applicants
in rural areas becomes harder.
With much larger cities and coun-
ties located so closely, many
decide to take up job offers else-
where.
Even after instituting a raise
within the department, the county
could not find applicants for the
empty slots.
Mr. Fajardo is now asking for
an apology from the county, as
well as having his position rein-
stated at the department.
Mr. Bengston, though, said his
decision to let go of Mr. Fajardo
could have been avoided had Mr.
Fajardo told the truth, instead of
trying to cover up what he did.
"This former employee was
terminated because of miscon-
duct," Mr. Bengston said. "You
can't blame management for an
employee's poor judgment or
misconduct."
Because he refused to cooper-
ate when asked about the inci-
dent, Mr. Fajardo proved to be
unreliable, according to Mr.

Counterfeit money circulating

By Ideybis Gonzalez

CLEWISTON- There are
reports of false bills circulating
throughout the area, according to
the Hendry County Sheriff's
Office.
The most surprising aspect of
the bills is how real they appear to
be. The bills are a spot-on repre-
sentation of the real thing so
good, in fact, that counterfeit-
checking pens aren't able to tell
the difference.
In actuality, the only reason
investigators became aware of
the problem was that the fake
bills were coming apart, being
two pieces of paper glued togeth-
er.

According to Sheriff Ronnie
Lee, the bills have been circulat-
ing throughout the county, with
stores and other businesses hard-
pressed to make out the bills as
false.
The scam sees suspects going
to stores, buying just a few items
and receiving change in real
money, according to the sheriff.
With bills in different denomina-
tions, the suspects may have
already gotten away with hun-
dreds, possibly thousands of dol-
lars this way.
"The use of the counterfeit
detector pens which detects
whether or not the bills are good
or not is no longer 100 percent,"
said Sheriff Lee, whose depart-

ment is working to find the
responsible party "The counter-
feiters are using a new technique
where the detecting ink will not. -
change color," he said.
He urged businesses and resi-
dents to be more wary. to avoid
becoming victims of the crime.
"We want the people in the
community and the local busi-
ness to be cautious and take a few
more minutes to double check
the bills," said Sheriff Lee.
Christmas is a time when
counterfeits tend to do more of
these activities, officials say, since
the clerks are sometimes too busy
trying to check out customers
quickly.

St. Lucie against FPL's power plant

By Nena Bolan
A letter from the St. Lucie
Board of County Commissioners
was sent to the commissioners of
Glades County. It was received
Dec. 1 and discussed during the
board of county commissioners
meeting of Dec. 12. The letter
urges the board to reconsider its
support for a coal-fired power
plant to be built within the county.
The letter was penned by Chris
Craft, chairman of St. Lucie Board
of County Commissioners and
states, "The negative air quality
effects of a plant of this type will
be felt by communities far outside
your municipal boundaries."
Mr. Craft also mentions the
negative effects on his communi-
ty due to the delivery of coal by
train traffic which "could poten-
tially block four major intersec-
tions at one time."
Several citizens spoke at the
hearing. Harris Friedman, doctor
of psychology, mentioned the pre-
existing mercury problem found
in fish. Steven Brown, the envi-
ronment policy specialist for Con
servancy for Southwest Florida,
brought up the point that the
largest coal-fired plant in Florida
could have far reaching applica-
tions. Pete Quasius, policy advo-

cate for Audubon, urged that the
study of emissions should contin-
ue before decisions are made.
Ellen Peterson, resident of the
Glades area, said, "We don't need
to be the receptacle of power
plants that nobody else wants."
She further pointed out that the
Glades area has unique animals
and habitat that people are anx-
ious, to,see and which does not
occur anywhere else. They are
going to destroy us and our way
of life."
K.S. "Butch" Jones, chairman
of the board, explained his stand'
on the board's decision to accept
FPL's offer to build a power plant.
He mentioned that he believed
the environmental impact is negli-
gible. He said, "If anyone thinks I
would sacrifice Glades County
environment's health for 21 mil-
lion, you have been badly mistak-
en.. The heritage that has been
passed on to me is to be good
stewards of our land, and I con-
sider that to be a priority today."
Mr. Jones said that the east and
west coast of Florida are upset
that the Glades Power Park may
have negative effects on their
counties, yet they want Glades
county to accept their county's
garbage and prisoners; and they
want the Glades area to store

water for them in case of drought,
flooding the Glades to keep their
own estuaries from flooding.
Butch Jones also said, "I have
to consider the poverty that exists
in this county, which is tremen-
dous."
He further said that the salaries
in the coastal counties are 2 or 3
times higher than what is found
locally, and that the jobs generat-
ed by the power plant will be
triple what the average annual
income is.
.Hugo Geistman, an Ortona
resident, openly:: voiced his
respect for environmentalists and
what they do. However, when he
spoke at the public hearing he.
was also critical of their priorities.
Mr. Geistman said, "One thing
that keeps coming to my mind is
where are you all when all these
cane fields get burned" How.
come you're not out there'
Where were you when all the fer-
tilizers got into the river?
"There are a lot bigger prob-
lems out there with the environ-
ment than the power plant I feel

that the power plant is going to
pollute less than the sugar cane
that it is going to replace," he said.

Bengston.
"Mr. Fajardo lied and that will
not be tolerated here," continued
Mr. Bengston. "He had the oppor-
tunity to maintain his job; all he
had to do was tell the truth, but he
stood by his lie until the. last
minute."
It underscores a more impor-

tant point, said Mr. Bengston.
"If you would lie about some-
thing so stupid, what would make
you think he won't lie about
patient care," Mr. Bengston said.

A big heart knows no bound-
aries. Ask a Belle Glade couple
about Marsha Carter of Marsha's
Helping Hands ofLaBelle
It been a very difficult year for
the Resendez family of Belle
Glade after their sole provider
suffered two strokes and was
hospitalized.
The family had to worry
about the basic necessities, with
little regard to what Christmas
would look like this year.
Fortunately, an agency with a
kind heart has stepped up to
help the family for the holidays.
The trouble began when
Ruben Resendez suffered a
stroke at his job. On his way to
the hospital, the father of seven
suffered another one.
The situation looked grim for
the family. Mr. Resendez was in
a coma for two weeks before
being transferred to Glades Gen-
eral Hospital from a hospital on
the coast.
On a visit to see her husband,
Ms. Resendez was mugged.
Her assaulters made away
with her rent money.
Ana Rivera, Housing Special-
ist/Hispanic Outreach Specialist
with Hendry-Glades Behavioral
Health Center learned about the
family's situation and offered to
help.
The family was a perfect fit
for the program's toys for tots
event, she said. For the event, a
business can elect to sponsor a

family and buy Christmas gifts
for the holidays.
Why should a family that has
been under so much worry have
to cancel Christmas?
"This is my third year partici-
pating in the toys for tots," said
Ms. Rivera. "Just the fact that I
work for Hispanic Outreach
makes me feel great, and know-
ing that I am doing something
for the community makes me
feel even better," she added
After a local business was
unable to sponsor the family,
Ms. Rivera continued looking for
somebody who would.
She remembered Marsha
Carter, with Marsha's Helping
Hands, an organization out of
LaBelle. The non-profit agency
itself survives on donations and
contributions from the commu-
nity, so it wasn't a surprise when
Ms. Carter offered to sponsor the
family.
Because of that generosity,
the family will now have a
Christmas. The agency will pro-
vide them with food, clothing
and toys for all seven children,
For Ms. Rivera, that means a
lot.
"It is unfortunate that this
family is going through this situ-
ation, I knew I had to do some-
thing for the children, and I did,
just in time for holidays," said
Ms. Rivera

Witch's Brew

I helped judge the Light-Up
LaBelle contest. We would have
loved to have had more prizes
because it was so hard to
choose. There are a lot of talent-
ed decorators in our town. We
saw a lot of beautiful places that
had not entered. This was good
because we would have been
judging all night.
Before storing tomato-based
sauces in your plastic storage
containers be sure to spray the
inside with non-stick cooking
spray. Occasionally a dinner of
pancakes and eggs is so good.
Especially if you hardly ever have
time for it in the morning. Waf-
fles are good too.

Put your
roll of trash
bags in an
empty coffee
can with an
X cut in the
plastic lid.
Pull one through and tear it off
leaving the next one ready. If you
like this idea, then cover the can
with contact paper or wallpaper
or material to match your cur-
tains.
Use a shoe box to stack all
your plastic lids in vertically.
Keep right next to the nested
containers.

Afterglow in Hendry: Relax and enjoy

T. W. Bill Neville
Having survived the hectic,
but stimulating round of Christ-

we now should relax for a
moment and reflect on all of the
past events of 2006.
Someone once told me that
having survived another year
was like the relief you get when
someone quits scratching their
finger nails on a blackboard. At
the time, I thought this was a lit-

I'm older, I can more fully appre-

of this what will really count, and
how will your life on earth be cal-
culated? It will come down to,
not what you possessed, but
what you created. Not what you
had, but what you gave. Your
individual learning accomplish-
ments won't count, but whether
you informed and instructed
those around you; that setting an
example by exhibiting honesty,
compassion, bravery, and
patience, duly inspired, embold-
ened, and motivated others to fol-
low your lead. Competency is
such a singular trait that what will -
really matter is your strength of
character. Over the span of how-
ever many years you have, what
will count is not the number of
people you've influenced, but
how many will miss you when

your time comes. Of conse-
quence will be the remem-
brances, not necessarily yours,
but of those who mourn your
passing. The true measure of
those remembrances will be for
what period of time, and the
what and who of those remem-
brances. A lifestyle in and of itself
doesn't necessarily happen on its
own, and is subject to circum-
stantial actions, and the choices
we have made. One of the most
precious gifts at your birth is your
right to choose, so choose wisely.
The precipitous path is not the
easiest path, but once you've
reached the summit, the view is
awe inspiring and you'll never
take the low road again.
As we look forward to putting
the lessons of 2006, good or bad,
into practice in 2007, keep your
hopes and ambitions on the high
road, and I'll look forward to
meeting you at the summit.

Proper uses for life insurance Part 2

Last week I talked about using
life insurance for protecting your
spouse, and also your children.
What about money for a previ-
ous spouse, and the children of
the previous marriage?
Many people are in a sec-
ond marriage but still have a
respectable relationship with a
former spouse, and even some
financial commitments. A life
insurance policy named in favor
of the former spouse can often
solve a bunch of problems that
remain otherwise unsettled.
Here is a tip for you. Check all
your life policies, individual,
group, even AAA accident insur-
ance. If you got remarried, did
you remember to update all the
beneficiaries? Every day in Amer-
ica, people die and the heirs dis-
cover the former spouse is still
the unintended beneficiary of
some life insurance.
One of the, easiest ways to
divide up a complicated estate
involving older children by a for-
mer spouse is by using life insur-
ance proceeds to balance the dis-
tribution.
Small corporations and
partnerships face major prob-
lems when an owner dies. Buy-
and-sell agreements are used to
redistribute the ownerships
when one of those parties dies.
Always have an attorney draw
them and review them. Life
insurance polices are used to
fund the agreements. The insur-
ance can be bought for pennies
on the dollar and when done
properly it can create income tax
free proceeds right when the
money is needed. It is a sad fact
that the majority of business
owners reading this article have
not taken time to properly plan
the distribution of their business
at their death!
Key employee insurance is
always talked about in insurance
schools but seldom utilized in

the real world. If you have, or if
you are, an employee whose
death would result in serious
financial loss to the business, a
life insurance policy is in order.
Here is an example: a builder or
contractor is dependent on the
license or the expertise of one of
his employees, and that key per-
son dies or gets permanently dis-
abled. The business owner has a
major problem that insurance
can solve.
Life insurance policies are
used for the purpose of employ-
ee benefits. Group term policies
are very cheap. Permanent insur-
ance plans cost more but offer
lots of structuring possibilities.
An insurance agent can get you a
policy that minimizes the life
insurance element expense, but
maximizes the cash build-up in
the policy. Universal Life, Whole
Life with cash build-up rider,
Variable Life, and Variable Uni-
versal Life, are all examples of
policies with the potential to
build up high values. Generally, a
life insurance policy is not an
investment; however, it can be
made to border on one.
Estate liquidity and estate
taxes! Unless a close relative,
such as a parent or grandparent
dies, and you become involved
in settling their estate, you never
have to deal with this. Your estate
problem doesn't occur until you
are dead. Nevertheless, if you
have had the good fortune of
accumulating a sizable estate,
you may also have created a

I would like to thank the
Caloosa Humane Society for
awarding to me the first ever
Cornelius "Kees" Huijer Award.
I was truly surprised and certain-
ly honored to receive such an
award. However, all of the
recognition should go to the
Caloosa Humane Society and
the people who work so very
hard to keep it running. For any-
one who cares at all about ani-
mals, can really appreciate what
these people do. Just look
around LaBelle some time and
you will see the need for this
shelter and what a big job that
they do there. They take in stray
or unwanted animals, feed
them, give them love and med-
ical attention, and hopefully find
a good home for them. Being
successful at this takes commu-
nity involvement since the
humane society operates on
such a tight budget. The shelter
is always in need of donations -
not just monetary, but also vol-
unteer time, as well as supplies,
such as newspapers, towels,
paper towels, Clorox bleach,
Dawn dish soap, cat/dog toys,
etc.
I, Mary Bartoshuk, challenge
next year's recipient of the Cor-
nelius "Kees" Huijer Award to
please come forward at the
beginning of 2007 and make a
difference at the Caloosa

major problem for your family
when you die. Your IRA's and
pension may not be as liquid as
you think. Your business may be
difficult to sell. Perhaps it will be
a bad time to put your farm on
the market. Your portfolio may
be down for a while. If your per-
sonal representative starts selling
things, anticipate taxes, and
appraisal fees. There is uncer-

Sunset or be greatly revised in the
near future. Having life insurance
owned by a properly planned
trust, or your children, can create
the liquidity needed to settle
everything with minimum dis-
ruption to your family.
Charitable Giving. Often
people name their favorite chari-
ties and churches in their will.

Sometimes they directly name
them as beneficiaries on life
insurance policies. You can gift
an insurance policy to a charity
during lifetime and get an imme-
diate tax deduction for its value,
and deduct future premiums by
making them payable to the
charity which then owns the pol-
icy and pays the premium.
A complex but perfectly
workable trust arrangement can
be drawn in which you get a big
tax deduction and your heirs
share in the beneficiary pro-
ceeds. It helps reduce the size of
your estate, benefits a qualified
charity, and benefits your chil-
dren. A good insurance agent
and board certified probate attor-
ney can put this together for you.

Local Firm, DEP and SFWMD celebrate at Groundbreaking Ceremony Sports shorts

C.A.N. Construction, Inc. of
LaBelle, the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection
(DEP), and The South Florida
Water Management District
(SFWMD) recently celebrated
the groundbreaking of con-
struction on the C-44 Reser-

Area near Indiantown.
Part of the Acceler8 initiative
launched by Governor Jeb Bush
in October 2004, the C-44 proj-
ect will capture, store and treat
stormwater runoff from the
116,500-acre C-44 basin in Mar-
tin County, attenuating flows
into the St. Lucie canal and
improving water quality in the
St. Lucie Estuary and Indian
River Lagoon.
C.A.N. Construction, Inc. has
a contract to install pumping
equipment which will facilitate
water flow control. Participating
at the celebration and providing
site preparation were Jos6 Her-

Longhorn Pee Wees take 6th in the nation
The LaBelle Longhorn Pee Wee Cheerleaders represented LaBelle proudly as they took
the mat at Disney's Wide World of Sports on Wednesday, December 6. The girls spent
four days at Walt Disney World making memories that will last a life time. It was a strug-
gle to raise the money to go, but the support of the community helped to make it possi-
ble. The families of these girls worked so hard to raise money, and see to it that they
would be able to go to Nationals. It was a stressful two weeks, but we did, it, and came
back 6th in the nation.

a reality," said DEP Secretary
Colleen M. Castille. "Today, as
we celebrate another remark-
able milestone, we are ensuring
that the entire ecosystem of
America's Everglades will con-
tinue on this path of recovery
and provide a health quality of
life and a vibrant economy for
Florida's future."
A component of the larger
Indian River Lagoon-South
restoration project, this project
consists of a 3,400-acre, 15-foot-
deep above-ground reservoir
that will hold 50,600 acre-feet of
water, providing significant
water storage for the C-44 basin.
The project also includes a 6,300-
acre Stormwater Treatment Area
(STA), a man-made wetland, to
capture and treat stormwater
runoff before it enters the St.
Lucie canal and, ultimately, the
St. Lucie Estuary and the Indian
River Lagoon. New conveyance
canals, embankments and a
pump station are part of the proj-
ect to aid in moving water
through the reservoir and STA.
"We are thrilled to begin con-
struction on this very important
project," said Lennart E. Lindahl,
governing board member of the
SFWMD. "It is a vital piece of the
Everglades restoration project
that is so important to all resi-
dents of the State of Florida and
crucial to the health and well-
being of the St. Lucie Estuary...."
Preliminary design began in
March 2006 and construction of
test cells was completed in June.
The test cells provided engineers

with critical water quality and
seepage information to design
and build the entire C-44 reser-
voir and STA on former agricul-
tural land.
Announced by Governor
Bush in October 2004, Acceler8
is stepping up the pace of fund-
ing, design and construction to
complete eight Everglades
restoration projects over seven
years. The projects will restore
100,000 acres of wetlands,
expand water treatment areas by
close to 29,000 acres and provide
428,000 acre-feet of additional
water storage for Everglades
restoration a decade ahead of
schedule. Six of the eight Acceler8

projects are already underway.
Since February 2006, the State has
expanded three Everglades Agri-
cultural Area treatment wetlands
and launched construction on the
C-43 Caloosahatchee West Stor-
age Reservoir outside LaBelle, the
Acme Basin B Discharge Project,
the Everglades Agricultural Area
Reservoir and the second phase
of the Picayune Strand Restora-
tion Project.
Under the leadership of Gov-
ernor Bush, Florida has forged
ahead to implement the $10.9
billion, state-federal Compre-
hensive Everglades Restoration
Plan. Since 2000, Florida has
invested more than $2 billion of
the committed $3.3 billion
through the end of the decade
to clean up and restore the
famed River of Grass.

West Glades Elementary shines at its first science fair

December 7, West Glades
School (located just north of
LaBelle) had its first ever Science
Fair. There were over 70 projects
in the science and invention cate-
gories and it was a huge success.
The projects are still on display for
viewing in the new middle
school. The hosts for fair were sci-
ence instructors Tom Gaskins III
and Sandy Yerk; judging the event
were the Honorable Joe Flint
(Glades County Clerk of Court),
Dr. Susan Cooper of LaBelle High
School, Sonny Mowbray (wildlife

biologist) and the following
teachers and staff who volun-
teered: Doreen Backes, Debra
Davis, Cara Austin, Vicki
McDougald, Donna Brittain and
Susan Prowant.
The five top projects were cre-
ated by 8th graders Rebecca
Fletcher, daughter of Jennifer and
Shawn Fletcher, Larisa Rivera,
daughter of Marisa and Eliud
Rivera, 7th grader Kelsey Cowin,
daughter of Dori and Paul Cowin,
and 5th graders Josh Rimes son of
Sabrina and Josh Rimes and Cyn-

thia Frederick, daughter of Brandy
Hill and Willie Avery. The winning
invention was created by Paul
Luckey, son of Stella and Larry
Luckey, II.
Rebecca was working with the
carbonation from soda and how it
can/can't fill up a balloon. Rebec-
ca's project was titled Bubbles,
Fizzles and Gas.
Kelsey was working in micro-
biology, finding out how different
molds would grow, her work was
supervised and her "growth" was
only allowed to grow within a

sealed Petri dish. Her project was
titled "does the 5 second rule real-
lywork?".
Cyndi was working with buoy-
ancy, she created various sized
boats to see how the different
shapes and sizes affect their abili-
ty to float. She measured their
buoyancy with the number of
coins the boats would hold.
Josh was working with rock-
ets. He wanted to know if differ-
ent masses can affect their flight.
His father works as a firefighter
with the Port Authority at the

Southwest Florida International
Airport and he has an interest in
flight.
Larisa was working with petu-
nias. She was looking at phototro-
pism and how light vs. dark
affects their growth rates and
flowering abilities.
Paul came up with his idea
because his house keeps getting
overrun with snakes and the
entire family is terrified of them.
He created a working model of a
hand that can grasp things at a
distance, this way no one would

have to get anywhere near the
snakes to remove them.
All students are residents of
Muse. All of the top projects and
their researchers/creators will b,
moving on to the Thomas Alva
Edison Regional Science & Inven-
tion Fair this coming Spring. The
Regional Fair and State Fair this
year are both being hosted in Fort
Myers.
A big thanks to all who partici,
pated and those hard working
souls that put this together and
helped judge the event.

Arcade offers games of skill

Think video games are just
for kids? Look again. The Lions
Den formerly the Lions Club -
is offering loads of fun for the
over 21 set that enjoys electronic
games of skill.
Owners Richard and K.C.
Lynn (Old Oaks Entertainment
of LaBelle, LLC) also own Let It
Roll Game Room in Clewiston,
and invite the community to
come and enjoy this unique
entertainment. It's one of a
growing number of legitimate
game rooms and features the
latest in electronic games of
skill.
The Lions Den opened its
doors Dec. 1. Employee Pam
Randall said they are offering
nice, family style entertainment.
"I love game rooms," she
said, explaining that she's
taught hundreds to play over the
years at other game rooms. "We
have the nicest people it's like
throwing a party every day!" she
added.
Pam said the player dictates
the movement of these electron-
ics, not the machine, so they are
truly a contest of skill. She said
families come mothers and
daughters, husbands and wives,
groups of friends everybody

The Glades: A reincarnation

By Patty Brant
For years local residents have
been aware of a natural treasure
a few miles east of LaBelle on
the Caloosahatchee River. For-
merly known as Hendry Isles
Resort, The Glades 492 acres
spacious country living has
been reincarnated by Jon Loftis.
Jon bought the property
three years ago from Joel
Hendry and is in the process of
adding RV sites, expanding the
small marina and the golf
course. Additional RV sites are
currently under construction, to
bring the total up to 478 from
just 100. He expects the huge
construction project to be fin-
ished in the Spring. All sites have
full service hookups: water, fuel,
sewer, electricity and phone.
They can be rented by the day,
ITIotith or year. Jon is proud of
the many repeat customers the

park attracts. He said the.
grounds offer walking trails pro-
viding access to nature and
wildlife, bicycle trails and are
pet friendly.
One of the jewels of the site,
the restaurant, is currently being
used as a clubhouse, but Jon
has plans to reopen it as a class
restaurant. However, at present,
his attention is on expanding the
RV sites.
Boaters will benefit from the
additional 16 slips at the marina
and golfers will be thrilled with
the renovation of the course.
A former teacher, football,
wrestling, track coach in West
Virginia, Jon is also retired from
a successful cemetery business
he ran in six states. He thought
he would enjoy retirement and
golf, but got bored. He also felt
the need to do something
worthwhile, which led him to

establish the Loftis Foundation
for Christian work. Knowing his
work would require a constant
stream of money, he wanted to
invest in something that would
provide an income for his mis-
sion work. That led him to The
Glades.
His nondemoninational
foundation has established mis-
sions in Ukraine, India Peru, and
in eastern US population centers
like Washington, D.C, Philadel-
phia, Atlanta, Orlando and
Tampa. They set up a "mother
church" which then extends to
other areas. He also plans to
have a retreat center at The

new venture. In ten years he
sees a fully occupied, profitable
retirement center and a marina
full of boats that will fund a lot
of good works.
And what of the golf course?
Teaching pro Gary McDaniels
is leasing golf course and has
completely remodeled it. The
course has a new blanket of
Bermuda grass. Every tee and
every green and fairway has
been reshaped into a totally new

workshops. The first will be Jan.

you have to do is show up.
He has also offered assistance
to both LaBelle and Moore Haven
High School golf teams.
The course has scrambles
Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Tuesday is for the ladies.
Remember Pinky's on the
Green? It's now Glades Golf Grill

golfing.
Gary has spent most of his life
on golf courses. He starts off

swing so they can compare it to
the pros. He said the average golf
score in the country is 103. Focus-
ing just on the fundamentals, he
said he can help anyone get into
the 80s.
Gary points out that people
need an escape nowadays. Golf
can help relieve that stress and
The Glades, with its newly reno-
vated course, is a great place to
do that.
