Bonita Bay Group
expands Hendry
County commitment

By Barbara Oehlbeck

Whether approaching from
the \est or from the East, along
State Road 80. Flora & Ella's has
been described as the Sunshine
Smile that lures the passing
parade, in this part of Florida, to

turn in and enjoy true southern
hospitality, plus home-cooking
that's the next best thing to being
home. The building itself is sun-
shine yellow, and old oak trees
wrap graceful arms around the
porch that's awash with comfort-
able old-time rocking chairs.
These are just a few of the rea-
sons that the Bonita Ba\ Group is
expanding its Hendry County
commitment by negotiating the
purchase of this unique LaBelle
landmark which \\ill continue to

be operated by the Trask Famil\.
Mitch Hutchcraft, regional vice
.president of The Bonita Bay
Group for Hendry County,
explains, "Flora and Ella's restau-
rant is a one-of-a-kind treasure
that captures the charm and his-
toric character of the LaBelle
community. We are dedicated to
making sure this tremendous
asset of the area is retained."
Sisters, Flora and Ella Bur-
chard, opened the restaurant in
1933 on the site of their father's

Goodwill to all

By Kristin Hunter

Two Goodwill Christmas
shoppers find s,:,me greai stuff
Rose Maloney and Carol
Haas ate good friends. They
have decided this year to stai t a
Snew tradition; to do all their,
Christmas shopping at Goodwill
stores spending no more than
$10 per gift. Roses' two daugh-
ters, Angela and Michelle have
decided to join them on this ne\w
tradition and Rose's daughter-rn-
law already wants 10 join in the
fun next year. Carol came up
with this idea after being a long
time shopper of Goodwill start-
ing about 12 years ago. There
are so many treasures to'be
found and they have already
stumbled upon some really
great finds. Angela.bought her
sister Michelle three pairs of
pajamas, one of them being a

Victoria Secret nightgown. Rose

scnme slotted spoons with holes
in them that Angela has been
looking for, for some Lime now.
Rose bought, her daughter
Angela, a decorative vase and::
her daughter Michelle a decora-
tie minor because they ie both
into decorating. She bought her
grandson a watch, but says her
granddaughter is a teenager and
is too picky so she just got her a
gift card from Target, :
They take off all the tags,

Community supports vo-tech

By Patty Brant

A dedicated group gathered
for the eighth year at the Cap-
tain Hendry House last Friday
evening to continue support-
ing the dream of an advanced
vocational-technical school in
LaBelle. The Education Center
of Southwest Florida, Inc., has
been providing computer
classes at its temporary home
on Missouri St., while the
board makes plans and raises
funding to build a permanent
campus on the Paul property.
The building will be part of an
educational complex includ-
ing Edison College and a high
school.
Keynote speaker Rhonda
Haag explained the role of the
South Florida Water Manage-
ment District in the area and its
partnership with ECSWF,
which is providing training for
heavy equipment and con-

struction workers for the Ever-
glades Acceler8 projects. The
C-43 Reservoir, which will be
located just west of LaBelle, is.
to begin construction next
summer. Already ECSWF has
graduated workers who will
be qualified to work there. In
fact, two young men from
LaBelle, Jesus DeSantiago and
Efrain Ruiz, spoke about the
opportunity they have been
given. Both recently graduated
from the third heavy equip-
ment operator class.
Efrain explained how
important the opportunity is to
him because it represents the
ability not only to make a bet-
ter living but the provides the
respect that goes with certifi-
cation in your field. Efrain
already has a job lined up with
Gustafson Construction in Fort
Myers and Gabriel, who cur-
rently works for the Depart-
ment of Agriculture, also

hopes to expand into con-
struction work. Both men are
graduates of LaBelle High
School.
During the evening, ECSWF
Chair Geri Yoraschek and
Executive Director Sonny
Hughes presented a certificate
of appreciation to Terri Nickle
of Lodge Construction for her
years of assistance in helping
to guide the education project.
Ms. Haag also presented a
check for $300,000 to the edu-
cation program, the second
year's funding for the con-
struction and heavy equip-
ment classes.
Karen from Boo Boo's
catered the Italian feast, which
was accompanied by Old
World sounds by the All Saints
(Plus One) Band. LaBelle Mid-
dle Schooler Zena Gatch
added a youthful touch as she
vocalized and played with the
band.

Caloosa Belle/Patty Brant
Stephanie Weathers.and fiance Mike Dunn had a great time
bidding on a cheesecake with key lime topping and espres-
so crust for Lodge Construction. The couple plans to be mar-
ried next February.

throughout South Florida as The
Big River. '
In the past two years, The
Bonita Bay Group has made a
strong commitment to Hendry
County, entering into a long-term

Family to plan and develop
approximately 5,200 acres in the
City of LaBelle and announcing
plans to develop Murphy's Land-
ing, a 187-acre master-planned

community along the Big River.
SBonita spokesman Mitch
Hutchcraft says, "The pulse of this
thriving region pumps. through
Flora and Ella's, it is a real com-
munity asset and we are. privi-
leged to be part of it. Our goals are
long term. We know that history
is important...the blocks on
which the future is built. Because
we believe in this community, we
are willing and happy to invest in
it. And we're also happy to know
that the quality and integrity of
Flora and Ella's will continue
under the dedicated guardianship
of its ambassadors, Irene and
Alan Trask."
The 'world' changes around
the setting under the ancient trees
but Flora & Ella's remains the
same steady and true to its
founders.
This "changing of the guard" is

but that everything was more dif-
ficult over there. They were under
harsh conditions so even taking a
shower took more time and effort
than it would normally take here.
The military police were in charge
of two primary things: security for
convoys (transporting the prison-
ers) and prison corrections.

When asked what he got out
of the experience he said, "A bet-
ter appreciation for how nice it is
to live here; how our daily life is so
much better here and a greater
appreciation for my family." He
said his Iraqi citizen interpreter
would give anything to come
here. One of the soldiers. was
complaining about having three
more months in Iraq and how he
couldn't wait to come home. The
interpreter said the soldier was
lucky because he had to spend
the rest of his life there. Bret said
the worst day here in the US is
better thin their best day in Iraq.
When asked if he thought
things were improving he said, "I
see good being done but my point
of view is erylimited." However,
he said most of-the Iraqis were
very appreciative. They don't all
hate us like some think. They
want to be us. I don't know if it's
getting any better, but I saw peo-
pie's liveS improve," he said. Bret
feels very fortunate that not a sin-
gle person out of his unit, approx-
imately 150 of them, died.
Bret said he plans to stay in the
military until retirement after 30
years.
There were a few LaBelle guys
in his unit. They were John
Billings, Josh Cline, Justin Lan-
drum and Brian Tull.
A typical day for Bret consisted
Of waking up around: T11 p.m.
because he had the night shift,
then eating breakfast and doing
"guard mount." He began -by
checking out the equipment for
the mission of the day and then
working a 12-hoar shift at the TIF
or Theatre Internment Facility
(AKA the prison).which happens
to be the largest in the world. It
was an enormous complex of
barbed wire fence where -military
police were in charge of the care,
custody and control of oyer 800
prisoners/detainees.
He said the military police
showed the ultimate in profes-
sionalism in an overall hostile cli-
mate and very dangerous place.
All the MPs carried a 9 mm and an
M-16. Bret said he never had to
use his.but was-grateful to have
them. As Sergeant of the guard,
Bret was in charge of 30 military
police officers.
Sixth grader Suzanna Harrison
provided this interview with Sgt.
Mayo:

GIFT CARD SCAM: Crooks have found a way to rob you of your gift
card balance. If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack (i.e. Target, Wal-
mart, etc...) that has various store cards, you may become a victim of
theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and
then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have
on the card. Once they find the card is activated they go online and
start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer
service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the
public. Please share this with all your family and friends.

BRIDGE ST. IS EYESORE: I believe that Bridge St. in LaBelle is an
extremely important representation of our town. I hear promising
plans of river walks and facelifts concerning the downtown area.
Meanwhile an ancient, broken down 30 year old yellow pick up truck
with 3 ft. tall grass growing all around it is allowed to be parked right
up by the road in the middle of town with a for sale sign on it. It's a defi-
nite eyesore and just a small.example of many issues that code
enforcement is going to have to address if we intend to make this a
more desirable community. I've lived here 25 years and would love to
see this town reach its full potential.

Review cost of homeowner's policy

I recently spoke with a friend
in Naples who is a very successful
property/casualty agent for one of
the large insurers. Listening to his
educated predictions for future
premium increases was not
encouraging. I was told that the
three major companies' in the
State of Florida are all pulling out
due to hurricane claims. The fact.
that we have not had any major
hurricane hit Us in 2006 does not
matter. They do not want the
"wind damage" exposure. The
way insurance companies handle
this is to send out a notice of non-
renewal some weeks prior to the
anniversary of the policy.,
We are all in the same boat.
There are a bunch of alternative
possibilities that may occur. You
may get offered another policy
with. a subsidiary company of
your, large carrier, using rate fil-
ings that are substantially higher.
You may get dumped completely,
or just the Wind portion of your
policy cancelled. Your agent may

First, I had to pay a contractor

He was a very nice fellow and we
both agreed I had a very nice
house. Then I received the quote
from Citizens for. $7,823.00. Yes,
that is correct $7,823.00. Part of
the price was $1,055 for the age of
the home and $1,000 for a loss
assessment. No, I have no idea of
what a loss assessment is. The
rest was for replacement of- my
home which Citizens uses a
magic formula that calculates:
2,000 sq. feet (the size of my
home) at a little over $175 per sq
foot. It comes to $315,100, I do
not have an option to insure it for
less even though my assessment
by the county is well below that.
Of course, I could hire an assessor
and argue the replacement.value
with them. But why throw good
money after bad?
The only option I have is to
leave my home uninsured. I will
not pay that outrageous amount. I
have that option because my
mortgage is held by an individual
not a bank or mortgage company.

would require me to accept the
rate arid put the money in an
escrow account.
So Sen. Webster, Governor
Bush what I understand is that the
election is over and it is business
as usual. Not surprising since
most folks,running for office
accepted the insurance industries
campaign funds. Do legislators
think the people of Florida have:
"stupid" written on their fore-
heads?
Don't go blaming the insur-
ance companies. They are in the
business of making money. It is
the legislators who got us into this
mess. They created the law that
allows (actually requires) Citizens
to gouge us. They are the people
who pass the laws that the insur-"
ance companies operate under.
They are the ones who grant the
companies their raises in rates. It
is the legislators who do not care
if you lose your home or not. If I
had one wish I would ask that the
legislators have to cancel their

home owners insurance until
they fix this mess to our satisfac-
tion.
They have appointed a com-
mittee to give them recommenda-
liohs. It's called The Property and
Casualty Insurance Reform Com-
mittee. Among their recommen-
dations, (you'll love this one) to
encourage insurers to take people
out of Citizens by allowing the
companies to charge the same
rate as Citizens for three years. In
my case that would have meant
Vanguard could take me back out
of the pool and charge me
$24,000 over a three year period
with no guarantee to me that Van-
guard would not drop me after
that and I would be backwith Citi-
zens. Isn't that a great idea! Does-
n't ithave my interests at heart? So
folks, prepare yourselves as your
insurance becomes due. May God
have mercy upon anyone who
falls into the hands of Citizens.
Merry Christmas.
Rita Dunne

Who has been the most influential person
in your life and why?
Alan Foote said,, "My wife has
been the.most influential per-
son in my life because she's
been my partner for most of
my life; 51 years to be exact.
She helped raise our family
and helped with our business
of John Deere Farm Equip-
S. ment. We listen to each other
and decide between us. We
had five children; three boys
and two girls. We tried to influ-
-- ence them to be honest, ambi-
tious and respectful of others."

Suzanne Schroeder said,
"My father, Densil, because
he had a great sense of
humor and positive outlook.
He was a very, very funny
man. He was also a very love-
able man; very warm and -.
affectionate. He was a kid in
many ways. He was the kind
of father that would get down
on the floor and play with his
kids. He influenced me to be
a very optimistic person even
when things aren't good." .

Tom Corbitt said, "I have to take a
B moment because there are poten-
tially two answers. I would have to
ysay that there are two people that
equally influenced me; my father,
James Allen Corbitt, because he
gave me the foundation in which I
.became a man and an apprecia-
L i tion for adulthood and taught me
what it really meant to be a man
such as family security, love of
country, etc. But also my wife,
Antoinette who I was married to for 40 years and who is
now deceased. She is the one that believed in me and
she took care of the family. She provided the home sta-
bility and foundation necessary, with a soft soil for our

Goodwill
Continued From Page 1
want for a great price including
name brands, hard to find.items, or
out of date, but still usable items.
She says the Goodwill in LaBelle
has cream of the crop items to
choose from and Rose,has been
going there since they first opened.
Rose says Carol was not a
Goodwill shopper when they met
12 year ago. Carol would sit in the
car and wait for Rose to finish
shopping. But she has seen the
great deals that Rose has gotten
and has come to her senses over
the years. They now go shopping
at all the Goodwill stores in South-
west Florida. She says Florida has
the best Goodwill stores because
of all the new people from up
north moving here that get rid of
stuff they no longer need and due
to all the vacationers that spend
time here and then get rid of the
stuff they buy so they don't have to
take it all backwith them. She even
knows which store to go to for spe-
cific items.
For instance, the LaBelle store is
small and therefore doesn't have
furniture so for furniture, go to the
Port Charlotte and Pine Island Rd.
store. For good books go to the
store in Venice, for unusual items
go to the Sanibel store, for a good
variety of everything go to the Ft.
Myers store on 41.
She said you can find great'
things for young children like

Rose Maloney shows off some of the great items at the local

Goodwill store in town.
games, toys, stuffed animals, bicy-
cles because they don't care if the
box is new or not so why spend
more? Also, down south kids only
need a coat for a short period of
time, so buying them one from the
Goodwill is a smart decision
because they will have grown out
of it by next ear anyway.
Rose also says you can buy
things such as Coach or name
brand purses and resell them on
Ebay and make a good profit. She
said a lot of people seem to be
doing that. She said American's
have such an abundance of things
these days that hen the\ 're tired
of what they have they just go out

and buy something new so that is
another reason there is so much to
choose from at second hand
stores. And don't underestimate
new items at thrift/secondhand
stores because they do exist more
than one might think. For instance,
Rose said they went to the Lehighl
Goodwill and there was a brand
new dining room table and four
chairs from Baer's furniture store
for $199 that still had the plastic on
it. Her daughter had a table and
chairs similar to that she paid $599
for. So the options are endless.
Don't count out thrift or second-
hand stores around Christmas time
or throughout the year, because

you never know what treasures
you will find. She said the bottom
line is people have everything
nowadays so there are a lot of great
things that you can buy second-
hand and save a lot of moneyon.
The Goodwill in LaBelle
opened 13 years ago. Over the
years they have carried brands
such as Gucci, Guess, Armani and
Tommy Hilfiger, just to name a few.
The Goodwill in LaBelle not only
receives items from locals in
LaBelle, but they also receives a lot
of merchandise from the head-
quarters in Ft. Myers. They carry-
CDs, baby clothes, shoes, purses
and some Christmas items such as
brand new, still wrapped, wrap-
ping paper, napkins and a few
wreaths. According to employee,
Eva Fuster, Goodwill is the most
popular clothing store in town,
where everyone from bankers to
doctors like to shop. She says, "tou
feel like family here with the great
customers." The Goodwill in
LaBelle offers 15 percent off to sen-
iors on Wednesdays and also offers
a different tag color every week
that means 50 percent off those
items.
Carol and Rose teach a furniture
painting class at the Alliance of the
,Arts in Ft. lMers. They tell all of
their students to go to thrift stores.
for their furniture. Rose also said
that after Christmas is a great time
to go to Goodwill because you
have all the items that people got
rid of oyer the holidays so they
would hate room for new ones.

gram is designed for the parents,
guardians, grandparents and
caregivers of young children
between the ages of 18 months
and 7 years.
The two-hour workshop is an
introduction to positive behav-
ior support, a research-based
method that brings together fea-
tures of applied behavior analy-
sis with person-centered values.
Topics include defining a target
behavior; gathering information
to determine the "function" of a
behavior; designing individual-
ized interventions to modify the
child's environment, teaching
skills to replace the challenging
behavior, and determining ways
to respond.

Kingdom Center ministers to all

Whatever you do unto the least
of these, you do unto Me.
Christians will readily recog-
nize these words as Christ's inclu-.
sion of the poor, hungry and
"unwelcome" of the world into
His church.
Shannon Craft believes those
words. He has been living them
since being saved eight years ago.
To continue that work, he and his
wife, Niki, have founded a new
nondenominational church called
The Kingdom Center.
Shannon recently became
ordained through the World Christ-
ian Outreach Ministry in Ooltewah,
Tenn., although he's been spread-
ing the Gospel for a number of
years. He has served as a youth
pastor at several churches includ-
ing Freedom Fellowship and The
Father's House in Buckingham. He
said he has learned from all the
pastors he's worked with, but
recently felt the Lord call him to
start a church in LaBelle.
Last July he and wife, Niki, wlho
has an exhorter's accreditation
.hriich allow s her to teach the

Word, began Bible study group at
their home on Wednesday nights.
Since October, the small group
has been working on renovating
the ground level of the Fussell
Building, 720 S: Main Street, Ste. A
and B. They will begin their first,
Sunday worship service at 10:30
a.m. Dec.. 10 and worship with
Bible study Wednesday at 7:30
p.m. Praise and worship leader
Andy Bratcher' and his wife,
Danielle, are very active in the
new church.
Shannon said their vision for
The Kingdom Center is to live the
Gospel feeding thehungry, cloth-
ing the naked and.to be of service
to the community. He plans to join
forces with other pastors through-
out LaBelle to make that vision a
reality. Churches, of all institutions,
should \work together, he feels, not
be competing with each other. He
would like to see all the churches
come together one Sunday a
month for a common service at
Barron Park. For more information,
call the church at 675-2100.

Submitfed pholo/Niki Craft
Shannon and Niki Craft wish to welcome you to their new
church, The Kingdom Center.
