ity, the city has received ques-
tions from the Department of

(DEP) on existing capacity and

By Patty Brant

A threatened deficit in fire
coverage, in both western
Hendry County and the City of
LaBelle was defused Friday,
August 18, when the Hendi\
County corn-is Sion'rirs
declared a local state of emer-
gency relating to fire coverage
in the unincorporated areas.
The looming crisis was brought
on after Dwayne Pratt was rein-
stated as LaBelle Fire Chief at
the August 17 city commission
meeting, resulting in the resig-
nation of eight veteran volun-
teer firefighters.
The county provides 70 per-
cent of LFD's budget which
pays for fire coverage outside
the city limits. LaBelle Mayor
Randy Bengston, who is also
the county's Director of Public
Safety overseeing the fire and
Emergency Medical Service as
well as Emergency Manage-
ment and other related depart-
ments, created a temporary fire
substation at the LaBelle EMS
station on Cowboy Way. The
firefighters who submitted
their resignations were then
transferred there and will be
paged out from the EMS sta-
tion. Three firetrucks have
been relocated there from LFD
as well as bunker gear and
other equipment for the fire-
fighters.
The new substation is a
temporary fix which must be
renewed by the county com-
mission every seven days until
LaBelle Fire Department's ros-
ter reaches 18 once again.
The situation has been
brewing for months. Last Janu-
ary, firefighters met with Chief
Pratt and Mayor Randy
Bengston in an attempt to iron

future. ATM's Grant Misterly
provided an update on the
water system at the August 17
commission meeting. Part of his
presentation included a rate
structure review.
City residential water cus-
tomers currently pay a fixed
monthly charge of $7.67 and a

out ongoing issues. Mayor
Bengston said a number of
those issues had been
addressed. However, last
month the firefighters present-
ed a lengthy list of grievances to
the mayor with a request for
the chief's dismissal.
Mayor Bengston said he
spoke with Chief Pratt and felt
that several of the grievances
were of sufficient gravity that
he asked for the chief's resig-
nation. Those issues included
alleged hiring discrimination,
personal use of city equipment
and improper disposal of city
property.
The commission's vote to
reinstate Chief Pratt came up at
the August 17 city commission
meeting. The result was 3-2:
Commissioners Dave Lyons,
Paul Puletti and Bob Miller all
voted for reinstatement while
Mayor Bengston and Commis-
sioner Hilda Zimmerly voted
against it.
Commissioner Zimmerly
said she voted against rein-
statement because she feels a
larger investigation of the entire
issue is in order. She said hav-
ing nine firefighters resigning
and at least 15 unhappy about
the running of the fire depart-
ment, is evidence that some-

thing is wrong that the city
needs to get to the bottom of.
Commissioner Zimmerly
had met previously with the
firefighters, as did all the com-
missioners except Mr. Puletti,
"because I wanted to know"
what their issues were.
Commission Puletti indicat-
ed he has serious concerns
about apparent ongoing prob-
lems inside the department,
but voted to reinstate Chief
Pratt because he felt the situa-
tion was not being handled
properly.
"I think it's a squabble over
control of the club and is noth-
ing to do with the substantive,
day-to-day operation of the fire
department," he said. He
added that he could not justify
letting the chief go without any
real investigation into the alle-
gations against him. He also
said that department heads can
only be fired by a vote from the
commissioners which did not
happen.
Commissioner Puletti fur-
ther explained his position. If
the chief needs improvement,
then he should be given an
improvement plan and moni-
tored. If communication is the

line in January 2010.
Mr. Misterly provided sug-
gested residential rates for the
future: a fixed rate of $18.40
(from the $7.67 currently) and a
commodity rate of $2.45 (from
the current $1.36).
He showed that these pro-
jected 2010 rates compare.well

with an average of $32.09 area
utility bills based on a usage of
9,000 gallons per month. In
2010, if the rates increase as
expected, LaBelle residential
customers' average utility bill
will be $40.45. He also suggest-

County looks

at fire issue

By Patty Brant
The Hendry County com-
missioners underscored last
Friday's declaration of local
emergency Tuesday night by
temporarily suspending its fire
protection contract with the
City of LaBelle. The suspension
will remain.in effect until the
board is confident that LaBelle
Fire Department can meet its
responsibility to county resi-
dents or the contract is renego-
tiated. Commissioner Kevin
McCarthy, who has consider-
able experience with Clewis-
ton's volunteer fire department,
was selected to help reconsider
that interlocal agreement.
County Director of Public
Safety Randy Bengston, who is
also the LaBelle mayor,
explained the temporary provi-
sions.which allow.the LaBelle

firefighters who resigned in
protest over the chief's rein-
statement last Thursday to
work under the county.
Mr. Bengston said at 4 p.m.
Tuesday the city had three
applications for firefighters -
one a career officer, one cur-
rently in the fire academy and
one with no training at present.
Commissioner McCarthy
did not wish to get into the p:li-
tics involved, but felt that there
must be a management prob-
lem at LFD. With the county
footing 70 percent of LFD's
budget, he added that the
county needs to have more say
in LFD.
Noting that LFD is consider-
ing hiring six full time firefight-
ers, Commissioner Bill Maddox
insisted he did not see the need

New driver's license building

Out with the old, in
with the new
By Kristin Hunter
The new driver's license
building is as busy as ever, but
now it is in a bigger and nicer
building than before.
It was definitely time for a
new building when the old one
was busting at the seams in more
ways than one. The cramped
trailer that has been known to
most as the driver's license build-
ing for the past 18 years on Cow-
boy Way is now going to be
demolished.
The state was going to close
the old building, but thanks to

Peggy Hampton who volun-
teered to take on the driver's
license office in LaBelle, LaBelle
still has a driver's license building
to call its own. The new driver's
license building is located at 100
JC/Lion's Drive in the old JC
building and is open for business.
It is still, however, in the process
of being remodeled and finished.
The old driver's license build-
ing was in a very small, 11x60 ft.
or 660 sq. ft. trailer that could
hold a capacity of 25 people
including the three person staff.
The new building is three times
that size. It is in a 30x62 ft. or
1,860 sq. ft. building that holds
approximately three times as
many people as before with a
staff of five that will be six in the

near future.
The hours of operation are
still the same with working hours
on Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m.-6
p.m. The telephone number is
still 674-4022.
The staff is doing a great job
trying not to keep anyone wait-
ing, but with approximately 125
customers daily there is no guar-
antee that they won't be busy. To
assure that you don't have to wait
the supervisor, Sallie Brown, sug-
gests calling ahead to make an
appointment. The driver's
license building is a full service
building meaning that they give
testing for driver's licenses, issue
driver's licenses and also update
them.

ed that the city not wait to imple-
ment a new structure, but go to
an interim rate.

Implementing an interim rate
from the current $7.67 fixed rate
to $13.04, utility bills would aver-
age $30.23, he said. A public
hearing will be set to discuss the
interim rate suggestion
According to Superintendent

of Public Works Michael Boyle,
the city's last utility rate increase
was in 1992. He also said that the
water plant has traditionally paid
for itself, however, for the first
time the water utility has dipped
into .he red.

problem then he should be
allowed an opportunity to
improve it. "None of that hap-
pened," he said. The chief was
not given a chance to respond to
the allegations and there was no
investigation. He fell that asking
the chief to resign was prema-
ture; that other options should
have been explored, such as sus-
pension and investigation.
Referring to allegations that
Chief Pratt inappropriately
signed fire club checks, Commis-
sioner Puletti said that, if the
chief is guilty of criminal actions,
he should be punished. Commis-
sioner Puletti pointed out that
several years ago the city prose-
cuted an employee for embezzle-
ment because he %was unwilling
to "let it go."
He said that after over 20
years of service to the fire depart-
ment and city, the chief
"deserved better treatment" and
questioned if the firefighters'
concern was for the safety of the
residents or for control of the fire
department.
He added, "I don't like being
pushed into a corner without any
options. Where was the due
process for. Dwayne?"
As of Tuesday, 11 volunteer
firefighters who previously paged
out of LFD are now covering the
unincorporated area outside of
LaBelle city limits; and the City of
LaBelle had ten firefighters on its
roster. Chief Pratt said as of Tues-
day noon he had three applica-
tions for firefighters and was
expecting more. Chief Pratt said
he feels some "personal jabs"
had been thrown at him and that
some.of the accusations were
petty. "I'm trying to take the high
road," he said, "the public
shouldn't have to suffer because
of all of this."
Should either the city or coun-
ty firefighters require back up,
Mr. Bengston said mutual aid
agreements continue to be in
force, so he feels confident that
all residents are adequately cov-
ered. Both stations are equipped
and nobody is lacking, Mr.
Bengston said, "I have done the
best I can for both sides of the
fence to make sure all are pro-
tected."

Why are the best candidate: I
am a firm believer in the public
school system! Being exposed
to different cultures is education
in itself and prepares people to
cope with life and interact with
others. I will stand firmly on cer-

good experience in managing
large budget efficiently.
What would be your first act

When Hendry County Sheriff's
Office Deputy Michael Home
responded to a theft complaint,
his investigation not only led to
the recovery of the articles stolen
from the victim, but a cache of
stolen appliances from Lee Coun-
ty as well. The victim suspected
that a former tenant had stolen
three wall air conditioning units
and a propane tank with fuel in it
from a mobile home she was
renting to him.
Sheriff Ronnie Lee stated that
Deputy Home discovered that the
former tenant was now residing
at 1171 Amanda Street in LaBelle.
The three air conditioners and.the
propane tank were recovered at
that location and information
developed there led deputies and
HCSO criminal investigators to
440 Clay Street, where the tenant
had previously lived. There they
discovered seven major appli-

OPINION Caloosa Belle, Thursday, August 24, 2006

Speak Out

Have an opinion or a question about a public issue? Post it anytime at
the LaBelle issues forum at http/A/www.newszapforums.com/forum56.
It is a hometown forum so visit the page as often as you would like and
share your comments (but no personal attacks or profanities, please).
You can also make a comment by calling our Speak Out 24-hour opin-
ion line at 675-4516. Comments will be published in the newspaper as
space permits.
To all Glades County residents planning to go to any government
functions or anything you are asked to keep your opinions at home.
One will be provided for you. You know what you gotta do.

A recent Muse political rally should alarm all those who value free-
dom when a few people wearing political T-shirts were pressured into
being censured because they declared an opinion a candidate did not
like. All should be aware of this arrogant abuse of free speech. Glades
County needs to vote to keep freedom. You can read more about this
incident at Newszap.com Glades County/Moore Haven forum under
two categories: 2006 elections and endangered public rights in Muse.

We live in the Southwest section of Muse. We moved here to be
surrounded by nature and wildlife. We feel protective of all the wild
creatures on our property, and strongly believe that they should be
able to live as nature intended.
Last week we were awakened to squealing and barking under our
bedroom. We looked to see that two large black dogs and one small
black dog had a small pig by the ears. The dogs were trying to kill the
pig. Our yells did nothing to discourage the attack of the dogs, even
though they were only five feet from us. Finally, we fired some shots
near them and they let go of the piglet and ran off. Later we heard
them chasing other animals all around our property, but too far away
for us to reach them. For three days after those dogs terrorized the
wildlife on our property we did not see any of the creatures that we
normally see every day. This letter will hopefully inform the owners of
those dogs and any others that are allowed to roam free and kill and
terrorize wildlife to the fact that there are several people like us who
love the wildlife and will do whatever it takes to protect it. If you do not
keep your dogs where they belong, you may end up losing them!
Muse resident and nature lover

Straight Talk

Question:

I know the county is working
on getting some sidewalks done
so that people can walk more
safely. Can someone tell me
where those sidewalks will be
and how long before they are
done?

From Hendry County
Road and Bridge
Plans are complete for side-
walk construction at the follow-
ing locations: LaBelle area: NE
Eucalyptus, Collingswood, SR 29,
DeSoto Ave. (Marginal Walk),
Cowboy Way, NW Eucalyptus;
Clewiston area: Harlem Academy,
Berner Road, Hooker's Point and
Del Monte Ave.
The first grant the county
received ($300,000) was for the
design of all of the above. The
county contracted with Johnson
Engineering in the amount of
$160,000 for the plans. The
remaining $!4,QOQ,,w.as to be
used :or Ihe partial construction
of NE Eucalyptus. The state only
encumbered $160,000 for this
project and when the plans were
complete and signed off on by the
state they then encumbered the
remaining $140,000. When funds
are encumbered they go through
five stages. According to the
state's procurement manager, the
NE Eucalyptus section was in the
last of five stages of being
approved for construction. She
expects it to take another week or

two.
The county has received a
Notice to Proceed (NTP) for all
the projects with the exception of
the above part of NE Eucalyptus.
NW Eucalyptus is believed to be
outside the grant dollars. Con-
struction has began on the por-
tion of NE Eucalyptus that we
have the NTP on. All of the above
sidewalks are being paid for from
a LAP Agreements with FDOT.
The county currently has four
agreements. Two of the agree-
ments expire on December 29,
2006, one expires on June 29,
2007, and one expires on Decem-
ber 30, 2007. The state would like
to see all the projects completed
within the agreement dates and
the sidewalk crew is aware of this.
Even though the crew is working,
delays are being caused. by
requirements of the grant agree-
ment. Bidding on the pipe for
these projects has been held up
until the county gets the NTP for
the first portion of NE Eucalyptus.
In addition, the county has
received an easement across the
street from LaBelle Elementary
School and plans on constructing
a sidewalk from the existing side-
walk on FPLs property to Carlyle
Street along Cowboy Way. This
sidewalk is being funded by the
county.

Freedom of speech threatened in Muse

By Harris Friedman

On Thursday, August 17, dis-
playing a sign stating, "R.I.P. FREE
SPEECH," while sitting alone in
his truck during a rainstorm
across the street from the Muse
Multipurpose Building, Carlton
DeLoach decided not to attend
the Muse Community Associa-
tion's political rally that night.
Joanne Aims, the Association's
president had told him that, if he
and his wife Mary attended the
rally wearing t-shirts that stated,
"Hey Alvin, our cow died, we
don't need your bull," many
politicians scheduled to attend
the event would boycott it. One of
the Glades County Commission-
ers had delivered this unfortunate
edict to President Aims, causing
her great distress. She and other
volunteers in the Association had
put in much effort in preparing for
this event, such as in decorating
the building and arranging for
refreshments. So President Aims
told the DeLoachs what was
threatened and they graciously
decided not to attend, thus avoid-
ing an unpleasant scene, but Carl-
ton staged his silent and solitary
protest outside in the rain.
The DeLoachs had attended
the Ortona Community Associa-

tion's political rally two nights
before, wearing t-shirts with that
same message, and there was no
incident. The DeLoachs reported
that they had sat quietly in the
audience at that Ortona event and
even had joked with Alvin Ward,
Glades County Commissioner,
about their t-shirts, though they
never came out and said that it
was Commissioner Ward to
whom the t-shirts referred. Carl-
ton DeLoach simply stated,
"There are lots of folks named
Alvin." So why did some local
politicians threaten to boycott the
Muse Community Association's
event?
There is some history here. A
number of years ago, the newly
elected leadership of the Muse
Community Association began to
criticize some of Commissioner
Ward's actions. When he attend-
ed Association meetings, many
tough questions were asked of
him and, after a few of these
meetings, he simply stopped
attending. The Association made
many overtures to get him to
resume attending, since he repre-
sents Muse, but he refused. He
told me that he was shunning
Muse because he did not need the
support of the Muse Community
Association in order to be re-elect-
ed and simply did not want to be

subjected to criticism by attend-
ing the Association meetings. Vot-
ers throughout the entire county
vote for Glades County commis-
sioners and Commissioner Ward
further expressed his belief that
he had sufficient county-wide
support, despite his problems in
his own district, which includes
Muse.
I and others from the Muse
Community Association contin-
ued to ask Commissioner Ward to
attend the Association's meetings
and he finally agreed to speak
quarterly at the Muse Multipur-
pose Building, but only if this
would not be under the auspices
of the Association-and with the
agreement that he would not be
publicly criticized. He arranged,
as a government official, to speak
one time at the building during a
night other than when the Associ-
ation usually meets, as part of a
Town Hall Meeting that he, not
the Association, sponsored-and
he agreed to return on another
date in a few months. No one crit-
icized him at that Town Hall Meet-
ing. Unfortunately, Commissioner
Ward did not follow-through with
any additional Town Hall Meet-
ings, breaking his promise.
No one enjoys being criticized,
but a politician is a public figure
who needs to represent his or her

constituents-and there will
always be those who disagree
with something. In addition, there
have been many concerns voiced
about Commissioner Ward that I
believe legitimately warrant criti-
cism, but I will hot go into any
details here on this. Instead, I offer
one overarching criticism that is
perhaps most basic, namely a
public figure needs to have the
courage to openly face criticism. I
simply find it disgraceful that any
politician might think he or she is
above answering to the people
that are represented. In this recent
political rally, that one local politi-
cian who claimed to be speaking
for other politicians threatened to
shun an event held for the people
due to a few protest t-shirts sends
the wrong message. I hope that
Commissioner Ward's shunning
of the Muse Community Associa-
tion does not have a ripple effect
in which other local politicians
now think they can be unac-
countable to the people they rep-
resent. And no matter how much
a politician in a democratic socie-
ty might try to avoid criticism,.
there is always a day of reckon-
ing-namely Election Day, when
the people's voicee cannot be
silenced.

Insurance needs where time counts

I am sorry I did not get out the
financial tip last week. I had to
go in the hospital for a minor
procedure and did not get my
article to the Caloosa Belle in a
timely manner. Do not blame
Patty Brant. She is an absolutely
adorable lady and very depend-
able. We are fortunate to have
her, and we should keep her.
As.,if Floridians don't have
enough crises to deal with, our
health insurance situation in-the
state for many. people is a disas-
ter. Many years ago I stopped
writing health insurance
because of how much time was
consumed in my business trying
to constantly find a lower premi-
um contract for my clients when
rates went up every year, and in
some cases in just six months.
Insurance companies selling
individual policies and group
policies are continuously raising
premiums.
For those of you who have a
business, even just a one-man
business, as long as it is legiti-
mate, August is the only month
of the year when there is an

Financial
Tips

open enrollment period forl
group health insurance plans,
regardless of pre-existing med-
ical conditions; even if you have
already been turned down for
insurance elsewhere. The rates
are not cheap, but it may be the
only option available to you
and/or your employees. Call
your local insurance agent, or
the Insurance Commissioner's
Office (they have an 800 phone
number), or major carriers such
as Blue Cross. You must get your
paperwork in before the end of
August to qualify without evi-
dence of insurability.
There is another situation
going on right now where time is

of the essence. The Department
of Financial Services of the State
of Florida has a Hurricane Dam-
age Mitigation Program. For the
last week or so thousands of
people have been signing up for
it. There is a limited amount of
money approved by the state
Legislature for this program, but
it is in the millions. Here are
some of the essential details: Go
to
www.inysafefloridahoroe.com.
At the Internet address, you can
fill out an application to partici-
pate in the program. You can
also call 1-800-342-2762 for
information.
In order to qualify, you must
own a primary residence in the
State of Florida that qualifies for
the homestead exemption, with
an insured value of less than
$500,000. Check this on the dec-
larations page of your home-
owner's insurance policy. It is
not the market value of your
home, not the taxable amount,
and does not include the land
value. It must be a site built
home, i.e. not manufactured

housing. However, money was
allowed to study improvements
for manufactured houses, and
they may be included at a later
date.
Inspectors are being
approved in certain wind prone
counties. around the state, and
they will come out and inspect
your home. .These are state
inspectors especially approved
for this program. Do not get
conned by any other inspectors
who might be falsifying informa-
tion. If after they inspect .your
home "for free" they recom-
mend certain improvements-to
strengthen your home, you can
get a grant of up to 50 percent to
$5,000 paid for by the State of
Floiida. This is an excellent ben-
efit for residents vwho qualify.
Inspections are now being done
in Lee,. County, and Hendr)
County will likely follow soon. I
suggest you look into, this right
now and see if you qualify, and
get registered while there is still
money available. This appears to
be a really good deal. Wayne C.

Witch's Brew

By Pudge Lehman

I'm baaaaack! My summer of
surgery is over. After my second
eye surgery my daughter Suzy
took to calling me Frankenmom-
my. The only reason I didn't
smack her was that she was my
main ride back and forth. My
place looks like the city dump due
to all the procedures I had done.
No lifting, no bending over, keep
off the right foot and then the left.
I've learned to live in squalor and
it's not all that bad.
To get rid of stains in glass
vases, decanters, etc. Just drop a
denture cleaning tablet in it and
add warm water. Let sit awhile
and rinse. Out of toilet cleaner?
Pour 1 cup of bleach into the
bowl and let sit for 5 to 10 min-
utes.

Always -
store your
opened cot-
tage cheese
container
upside
down. Stays
fresh a lot longer. I put it upside
down on a saucer just in case it
doesn't get closed tightly. A little
precaution saves a lot of work
later.
I'm treasurer of the Legion
Auxiliary and can't tell you how
many times I write a check on the
wrong page. My friend Lois McFall
slipped a paper under the top
page so I can see which one is
next. So simple...
Sayin' of the week comes from
Suzy Kennington... "I work myself
to death trying to keep things sim-
ple." That is the story of my life...

How do you think problems at the fire department can be over-
come? Mr. Pratt had resigned but has been reinstated as the fire
chief and some firefighters have resigned.

Caloosa Belle/KrIstin Hunter
Lori Howard said, "I wasn't aware that

I'm a life long resident of LaBelle.
However, as with any business or
organization communication is
always key."

Lola Beard said, "There has to be
better communication. There is a
lack of communication at all gov-
ernmental agencies. Don't point fin-
gers. If there are problems,.solve
them, but don't point fingers."

Jean Morrissey said, "I think
Dwayne Pratt has been a good fire

S need to communicate and get a
long better."

Bruce Beer said, "Get the politics
out of it maybe by having an out-
side, non-political, impartial media-
tor for the interest of the citizens.
The safety of the community should
be #1, ahead of the problems of the
firefighters."

Cody Johnson said, "it's really hard
to say because I don't know the full
story but it seems like they need to,

TO OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS:

Bryant Roofing, Inc. would like to thank the residents of
Hendry County for your patience and loyalty toward us over
the past year. After last year's hurricane season, we were
overwhelmed with calls for help. We tried to accommodate
everyone as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, some home-
owners had to wait longer than others due to the volume of
calls received. We understand this was a very difficult time
and we sincerely apologize for the length of time it took to get
to some of your homes. We are in the middle of another rainy
season and at this time we would like to inform residents that
we are currently back on schedule and able to do your roofing
,work in a timely manner. We are state certified with workers
compensation and liability for your protection. We stand
behind all of our work with a five year warranty on re-roofs
and metal roofs. Be prepared before the next hurricane by call-

Here come the LMS Broncos!

LMS has a football team

By Kristin Hunter

The LaBelle Middle School has
its first football team and they are
excited! The Broncos have 34 boys
and are off to a great start. They are
working hard practicing from 2:30-
5:30 every day with head Coach
Gary White and two assistant

coaches Craig Mehlenbacher and
Coach Shawn Viecelli. Head Coach
Gary White said, "We have had a
lot of interest from the community
in the middle school starting a foot-
ball program and we would like to
thank the parents and community
for helping to get this started suc-
cessfully."
As of right now the Broncos are

scheduled to play six games:
9/7-Evangelical home, 5 p.m.
9/14-Clewiston away,5 p.m.
9/21-Moore Haven home, 5
p.m.
9/28-Evangelical away,6 p.m.
10/5-Clewiston home, 5 p.m.
10/19-Moore Haven away, 6
p.m.

Learning the moves
Pop Warner Tiny Mites and Mitey Mites really rolled
last Sunday in the Jamboree that kicked off their sea-
son. Here the Mitey Mite on the far left carries the ball
and heads toward the sideline as his teammates block
for him and LeHigh players try to head him off. As
always, the cheerleaders gave their all, whipping up
enthusiasm on the sidelines. This is the second year
for the Tiny Mites, 5-7 year olds, and there were two
teams, Red and White. The Red team played LeHigh
Raiders and Fort Myers Firecats while the White team
played the Immokalee Indians and Fort Myers Firecats.
The Tiny Mites do not keep score. The Mitey Mites were
hot, hot, hot, tying the LeHigh Raiders A 6-6 and then
beat the Raiders B team, 12-0. Longhorn home games
are played at Davis-Pratt Field; $4 for adults; $1 for stu-
dents.

Cowgirls to rely on senior leadership

The Cowgirls' season opened
up Monday, August 14, and their
first home game will be Wednes-
day, September 6. The Cowgirl var-
sity volleyball team defeated Cape
Coral High School in their first
match of the season. The Cowgirls
won in three straight games 25-20,
25-13, and 25-17. Brogan Heisler
led the way for the Cowgirls in the
serving department with four aces.
Vanessa Ostaloza and Alexa Redish
also contributed with three aces
each. Offensively the Cowgirls were,

led by Heather Raulerson with ten
kills and Vanessa Ostaloza with
seven kills. Dani Blake ended the
night with a total of 24 assists.
The Cowgirl varsity volleyball
team will be looking to the leader-
ship of the two senior captains, set-
ter Dani Blake and outside hitter
Heather Raulerson. At the setter
position Blake is expected to run
the offense. "We are very lucky to
have such an athletic setter, she def-
initely makes things happen."
Raulerson will be relied on

heavily in the serve receive rotation.
"We want Heather to have the
opportunity to take as many serves
from the opposing team as possible."
Also, adding strength into the
Cowgirls' line up are junior middle
blockers Vanessa Ostaloza and Alexa
Redish. Both of the girls are returning
starters and have now matured into
very competitive players. Their contri-
bution will have a huge impact on
this season and hopefully continue
into their senior year, according to
Coach'ShellyBlake.
Senior Brogan Heisler and

Juniors Lacey McCall and Jacy
Sealy will be counted on for their
ability to play in many positions. It's
not.a common skill involleyball for
a player to be able to play in each
position that the coach wants, and
even less common to play those
positions effectively, but Heisler,
Sealy and McCall seem open to
everychallenge set before them.
Defensively, the Cowgirls will be
looking to seniors Tiffany Terrell
and Suzi Greenleaf. "Defense is
often overlooked by people
because it's not a stat that usually

gets your name in the paper, but it is
an extremely important role on this
Iearn and these two girls gladly take
up thie challenged Coach Blake said.
Finally, the youngest addition to
the Cowgirl varsity is sophomore
Blake Rice. Blake came in and
picked up very quickly on the
upbeat tempo of the varsity. She
has all the skills that are necessary
to be successful on the court. She'll
be looked to for her strength in
serving and passing.

Some newspapers seem to take pleasure in the bad news. Not us.

We do print "bad" news. (It IS newsworthy when things go
wrong, and citizens need to know about problems.)

Still, we give most of our attention to good news the kind you
clip and tape to your refrigerator door. (This isn't difficult. The
vast majority of what happens in our community IS good.)

How are we doing?

Local author earns publishers' excellence award

Local author Barbara Oehlbeck
just keeps getting better. Most
recently she brought home the
prestigious Florida Publishers
Association 2006 award for Best
Florida Book Nonfiction for her
monumental biographical effort
The Ranch ... Hilliard Brothers of
Florida by Joe Marlin Hilliard with
Barbara Oehlbeck in collaboration
with Florida Classics Library, Port
Salerno over five years in the
making. The book chronicles the
Hilliard family from the turn of
20th Century to the present.
After receiving her award, Ms.
Oehlbeck said, "Often, the nicest
things come at unexpected times
from unexpected sources. Such
was the case August 19.
"Writing a biography is a great
responsibility. The biggest chal-
lenge is honesty in writing about
not only the principal but also the
characters. It's difficult to stick
strictly to the person, what he's
done or not done, how he feels
and sees his life as it relates to the
principal. A writer may think that
writing about the character in a
flattering way could make the
book more readable. This could
be true in writing fiction, but never
in a biography. Nonfiction must be
true and honest. The Ranch is, to
say the least, oversize, with 640
pages and 80-some characters.

Caloosa Belle/Paty Branm
Authors Barbara Oehlbeck and Lowell Teal were honored
August 19 with first place awards by the Florida Publishers
Association.

The challenge was long and ardu-
ous.
"Confession: sometimes I won-
dered if all the effort was worth it.
Now I have to say ... yes, itwas."
The day was made even sweet-
er as her good friend, Lowell Teal,
won the comparable award for fic-
tion with his novel Bath Pond.
Ms. Oehlbeck is well-known as
the author of The Sabal Palm: A
Native Monarch and For the Love
of Roses. Her other books include

The Boy, The Man and The Bishop
and Barefoot to Boots (Charles W
Flint). Ms. Oehlbeck has twice
won awards from the National
Writers Association, Florida Chap-
ter in the nonfiction short story cat-
egory: a first place for Ricky and
third place for Cascade. She was
also named a Woman of Achieve-
ment in the arts. Ms. Oehlbeck is

Parish children enjoy the new playground equipment.

Church dedicates playground

Our Lady Queen of Heaven
Catholic Parish celebrated the
dedication of the Sacred Heart
Children's Garden Playground on
August 13. The playground is
named for the Religious of the
Sacred Heart Sisters who served
the parish faithfully from 1979 to
2004.
Iwo of those sisters came back
to LaBelle for the dedication. Sr.
Madeleine Desloge, RSCJ, served
the parish and the LaBelle com-

munity for 22 years, The parish-
ioners took this opportunity to
help Sr. Madeleine celebrate her
90th birthday! Sr. Marie-Louise
Wolfington, RSCJ, served in
LaBelle for six years. Many will
remember Sr. Marie-Louise for
her efforts in establishing Habitat
for Humanity in Hendry County.
Other sisters who served in
LaBelle, but could not be present
were; Sr. Bienvenida Velez, Sr.
Carol Bialock, Sr. Muriel

Cameron,and Sr. Rosemary
Thompson, Especially remem-
bered in prayers at the dedication
were Sr. Rosa Orjuela and Sr. Mer-
cedes Posada, who were tragical-
ly killed in a car accident in 1995,
while driving a parishioner to a
job interview. Six other members
of the Religious of the Sacred
Heart drove up from Miami to
share in this special day.
Laura Davis, Playground Com-
mittee Chair, spoke at the event

about the importance of nurtur-
ing children's mind, soul and
body. She thanked the other com-
mittee members K.C. Stanley
Lynn, Donna McAvoy, Cate Moon
and Donna Strickland, for their
efforts. As soon as the Pastor, Fr.
Chester Domaszewicz and Asso-
ciate, Fr. Jiobani Batista, blessed
the new playground equipment,
the children of the parish rushed
to try it out.

Goodbye... and...Hello, Debbie!

By BarbaraOehlbeck
None of "us" who've been "reg-
ulars" at Flora & Ella's Restaurant
wants to think about Debbie not
being there. However, as we all
know change is inevitable, and so it
is in this case. She says, "This is the
right time for me to make a change.
It's not easy. I get very emotional
but tat doesn't mean I'm wavering
about it. It just means you can't
spend your life in one place and not
have a lot of deep feelings about
leaving. Flora & Ella's is family...in a
big way it's been home to me ever
since Iwas born..." And she means
just that. Debbie Burchard was
born in Flora & Ella's first location
on Bridge Street. She grew up learn-
ing the'business from "one end to
the other."
She laughs saying, "I mean
EVERY end...from scrubbing the
kitchen floor to cleaning the bath-
rooms, to cooking at every sta-
tion..."
The tears don't, quite spill over
but they're close as she says: "Well,
there are a few things I won't
miss...like getting up six days a
week at four o'clock! And there are
more than a few times when I have
to stay through the dinner hour and
dose up for one reason or more...
.Whatever the reason someone has
'to close up and put things in order
for the next morning. And that's the
manager's job. I can't say I haven't
loved it, I have. But now I'm turning
myself in another direction. I've

always been fascinated and drawn
to business finances, and I feel that
this is an opportunity I need and
want to explore. I've always been a
people person and I'm so happy
that this will be an extension of that
part of me."
That opportunity for Debbie is
that she'll be moving only a block
or so east, still on
Hickapoochee/Route 80 to First
Bank of Clewiston.
Joe W. Shivers, Senior Vice Pres-
ident/Area Manager, First Bank of
Clewiston:
"We are very happy to have-
Debbie Klemmerer join our LaBelle
bank family. She brings with her
not only her smiling face and sun-
shine personality, but also her deep
roots in the community. Her knowl-
edge of the people and the history
of this area will be a real asset to us
in maintaining our community citi-
zenship. We will also miss her at
Flora & Ella's, but we are happy to
be chosen to help with her new
career."
Flora & Ella's is a significant
Florida landmark having made its
own place in'the sun beginning
over seventy years ago. And, there
are more than a few celebrities
who've made a habit of stopping
for a meal in going or coming from
the East Coast. Patrick Smith whose
book "A Land Remembered" out-
sells all the others, and in his day
Governor Lawton Chiles would not
step his foot inside LaBelle xvithout
heading for Flora & Ella's. And one

new life.
afternoon Nat King Cole's daugh-
ter, Natalie, came in and made
friends with not only Debbie but
several waitresses. Television's
renowned ministers, John and
Diane Hagee always visit when
they're in the area. Durwood Kirby
and Burt Reynolds are also in Flora
&' Ella's fan club and it's been said
more than once that Flora & Ella's is
local, state and national "Political
Headquarters."
And there's more: This is the
place where memorial gatherings
are held, anniversary and birthday
events as well as receptions of all
sorts, and a special book signing for
Patrick Smith and his "Land
Remembered". And, Flora & Ella's

considers it a high honor that wed-
dings are held under their roof
where if the happy couple wishes,
Senator Alan Trask will officiate. In
addition, at least once year, usually
on Valentine's Day, there is concert
by Dr. Paul Pitts, who's acclaimed to
be the Pavarotti of the U. S., with
whom he has performed many
times, along with his pianist, Dr.
Sammy Lane.
Smiling through tears, Debbie
says with total conviction....when
He closes one door, He always
opens another. She didn't have to
look far for that open door...just a
couple blocks eastward to First
BankofClewiston.
