After their performances they

their families. On Sunday, sev-

New hope springs from tragedy

By Kristin Hunter

Minutes after filling the van
up with gas at the nearby BP
gas station, Cephas and Betty
Wilson's 1989 Ford van caught
on fire, so they parked the van
at the LaBelle Motel and
jumped out. According to the
Sheriff's Department there
was no carburetor filter cover
so the carburetor got hot,
starting the fire. After the fire-
fighters put out the fire,
Cephas tried to salvage what
wasn't completely destroyed.
Cephas and Betty are both on
disability and they lived in the
van. It was everything they had
and they lost everything
including important paper-
work like their insurance infor-
mation, clothes, shoes, books
and stuffed animals. They just
bought the van two months
ago and only had one more
payment before it was paid
off. Their insurance did not
cover everything they lost.
The couple had a tent and
was going to stay at Ortona
Locks, but they were not
allowed because you have to
have a vehicle to star there, so
they stayed at the Big V Motel
instead. With only $10 in their
pocket the next day they
walked to the U-Save to get a
grocery cart so they could haul
their stuff around. They then
walked to the Caloosa Belle
where Editor Patty Brant called

One of the reasons I initially
ran for the office of LaBelle
City Commissioner-Treasurer
was because I was concerned
with the growth and change I
was seeing and wanted to
maintain the rural character
that attracted me to LaBelle.
I believe the biggest prob-
lem LaBelle is facing is growth.
If we don'f do our planning
well, LaBelle will just become
like many other small cities
that have gotten swallowed up
in un-planned growth. Associ-
ated with the, growth issue
come many other issues that
must be addressed including
infrastructure such as water,
sewer and roads, recreational
facilities like parks and sports
fields, cultural, facilities like
museums, environmental and
performing arts centers and
many other issues we need to
examine. To approach this
problem, we need to "over-
plan" for it.
We need to know what we
want LaBelle to look like in 10-
20 years and more. We need to
put plans in .place to get us. to
where we want to be. Hiring a

I think we can all agree
that the biggest problem fac-
ing the city is the water issue.
We need a new water plant
and have for some time. We
need to be able to get a water
plant that can provide enough
safe, drinkable water for the
entire city of LaBelle.
There are no easy fixes for
the challenges LaBelle faces.

CLEWISTON For the first
time in thirty years of serving the
seniors of Hendry/Glades coun-

to the Hendry County Commis-

.Ms. Schield agreed that "It
may be that the past two hurri-

to close down an agency, but
we're using taxpayer's money."
In 2004, the previous Senior

the commissioners to plead for
their help in salvaging what ever
services that they can.
Hope of Southwest Florida

the contract for senior services

In the last few weeks Senior

paperwork that Ms. Nolan

Case files, which she said are
AAA's major complaint, took a
back seat to client services.
Turnover was .high, causing the
very detailed paperwork docu-
mentation of services to be lax.
In 2005, the 15-year executive
director resigned. Hurricane
Wilma dealt them another major
setback one week later. An inter-
im director filled in until Ms.
Nolan came onboard. The
agency was in "emergency man-
agement mode" once again and
"never had the luxury of bounc-
ing back." She said that Hope is
a wonderful organization, but
has no real experience in.con-
gregate feeding.
Senior Connections has sub-
stantial real estate that Ms. Nolan
says will not be turned over to

Senior Connections has fall-

they struggled to provide servic-

The commissioners voted to
help finance three additional

offered to support them with a
letter writing campaign.
Commissioners also suggest-

control of steering and flipped over in the median. He was pinned behind the steering
wheel but was able to climb out on his own. He was wearing his seatbelt and only suf-
fered minor injuries. He was taken to Lehigh Hospital for precautionary reasons.

BAD SIDEWALKS IN LABELLE: Let's have a contest to see who can

One of the handiest things to

Clorox jug. Cut out a big hole on

remove what you need. Also
good for the beach to collect

You may prune your

plants in summertime

Now that summer has arrived,
your plants are growing extra fast.
You can prune them at anytime,
the only thing to look out for is the
blooming plants. Hibiscus plants
grow very fast in warm weather.
You can keep them cut back regu-
larly using the one-third method.
This means to keep your trim-
ming only to one-third the height
of the bush. This will help your
plants bush out more evenly top
to bottom. Also if you mulch,
keep the mulch away from the
base of hibiscus approximately
three inches. They are susceptible
to fungus.
Surinam-Cherry (Eugenia uni-
flora) is a wonderful shrub, not
only does it produce eatable fruit,
but the birds feed on the fruit as
well. This can be grown as a spec-

imen plant, for the fruit or as a
hedge. Surinam Cherry plants are
reasonably drought and cold tol-
erant. The foliage is very colorful
after pruning or on a growth
flush.
If you are wondering what to
do about the lichens on your
shrubs, try Liquid Copper on the
bark. This will kill sooty mold and
lichens.
Happy gardening!

Pest control rules enhance

consumer protection

Florida Agriculture and Con-
sumer Services Commissioner
Charles H. Bronson is announcing
that a set of new rules has gone into
effect that provide improved pro-
tection for consumers who con-
tract with pest control companies
for termite service.
All contracts issued by pest con-
trol companies for termite control
must now clearly tell consumers if
the contracts cover subterranean
termites, drywood termites, or
both. If they don't cover Formosan
termites, a particularly aggressive
form of subterranean termite, the
company has to clearly state that.
"The average homeowner may
not understand that there are differ-
ences in the types of termites that
can invade their homes as well as
differences in the kinds of protec-
tions that address each insect,"
Bronson said. "We have found that
many people do not realize they are
not protected against one or the
other until their home is damaged
and it is too late."
Another important change that
goes into effect immediately is that
companies that perform only
"spot" treatments post that infor-
mation on treatment stickers in the
structure. Existing homes may be
treated prior to being sold, especial-
ly when pre-sale inspections show
some termite activity. Sellers may
opt for a less expensive spot treat-
ment rather than a full treatment.
Until now the treatment sticker did
not have to specify that it was a
"spot" treatment.
"This is especially important for
home buyers," Bronson said. "Buy-
ers of existing homes may be told
that a house has been treated
before they buy it, but not informed
the treatment was only to a limited
part of the building. 'Now they will
know if the treatment was full or
partial."
Other changes in the contract

rule require that pest control com-
panies retreat infestations covered
by a contract within ninety days
(180 days for multiunit structures).
Previously there was no time limit
on when the service had to be pro-
vided. Companies are now also
prohibited from denying re-treat-
ment or repairs if they were aware
of a construction defect or other
condition conducive to termite
infestation, such as a water leak,
and did not inform the property
owner and allow them to repair it.
Nearly all contracts have limita-
tions and exclusions under which
treatment or repair does not have to
be done, for example if there is a
plumbing leak. Prior to this rule
change, a company could be
aware of a defect, collect renewals
for several years, and then deny re-
treatment or repairs when they
became necessary. Pest control
companies have a year to change
their contracts to reflect these
requirements.
"The practices these rules
require are already common to al)
good pest control companies, but
we need these rules to prevent a
few from taking advantage of con-
tract loopholes and not protecting
consumers from termite damage,"
Bronson said.
Bronson says the rule change
information is particularly valuable
to consumers right now because
July is the drywood termite season
and homeowners need to take
steps to protect their homes from
these damaging pests while at the
same time protecting their rights in
pest control contracts.
Consumers can get more infor-
mation on termite protection, the
difference between subterranean
or drywood termites, or file a com-
plaint against a pest control compa-
ny, by calling 1-800-HELPFLA (1-
800-435-7352) or logging onto
http://www.floridatermitehelp.org.

nies will sell direct to the con-
sumer. Just follow the instruc-
tions carefully and double test
everything. If you do it yourself,
try to think like a burglar! How
would you go about breaking into
your own home with the least
detection?
Here are a few very important
tips you need to know. First, a pro-
fessional crook will cut your
phone line before he breaks into
your home, so you must have a
hidden phone line or other means
to thwart his devious behavior.
Second, many systems have an
inside alarm, but do not have an
outside' alarm. Always have an all-
weather outside alarm of at least
110 decibels. Try to keep it out of
sight, such as an inconspicuous
area (on the roof or inside the
attic facing out some ventilation
holes. Your neighbors need to be
able to hear it.)
Third, I recommend one or
more inside motion detectors that
are not visible to a casual observ-
er. Free of charge, I have installed
systems for friends (they paid for
the materials), and one of the
most clever was a client that
drilled a hole through his wife's
china closet about three feet
above the floor and positioned a

detector between her plates. The
dog was not tall.enough to set it
off, but a burglar would walk by it
and set it off if he got in the house.
Fourth, have a battery backup.
Design or have a professional
design your system, so you can
have the exterior monitored while
you are sleeping, but the inside
motion detectors turned off when
you go to the kitchen or bath-
room during the night. Also,
design the system so pets don't
set off false alarms.
If your insurance agent tells
you the system must be moni-
tored to get the discount, remind
him or her of all the extra things
you have done to perfect your sys-
tem (if that is true) and he can
probably make the decision to
allow the discount. If you install
your own system, you can buy a
telephone dialer and program it
yourself to call the police, your
office or whomever you decide.
Don't hesitate to call the Sheriff s
office for advice. They are good
people.
What you end up with is about
a ten percent reduction for life on
your homeowner's premium.
There is an excellent chance that
a burglar, when hearing that loud
alarm, will run off real fast. You'll

Hurricane season brings many
dangers. After an extended power
outage it may be difficult to know if
food is still safe to eat. The USDA
offers the following tips for keeping
.food safe during an emergency:
Always keep meat, poultry,
fish and eggs refrigerated at or
below 400 F and frozen food at or
below 00 F. This may be difficult
when the power is out.
Keep the refrigerator and
freezer doors closed as much as
possible to maintain the cold tem-
perature. The refrigerator will keep
food safely cold for about four
hours if it is unopened. A full freezer
will hold the temperature for
approximately 48 hours (24 hours if
it is half full) if the door remains
closed. Obtain dry or block ice to
keep your refrigerator as cold as
possible if the power is going to be
out for a prolonged period of time.
Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold
an 18-cubic foot full freezer for two
days. Plan ahead and know where
dry ice and block ice can be pur-
chased.
Be prepared for an emergency
by having items on hand that don't
require refrigeration and can be
eaten cold or heated on the out-
door grill. Shelf-stable food, boxed
or canned milk, wate, and canned
goods should be part of a planned
emergency food.supply. Make sure
you have ready-to-use baby formu-
la for infants and pet food. Remem-
ber to use these items and replace
them from time to time. Be sure to
keep a hand-held can opener for an
emergency.
Consider what you can. do
ahead of time to store your food
safely in ah emergency. If you live in
a location that could be affected by

a flood, plan your food storage on
shelves that will be safely out of the
way of contaminated water. Cool-
ers are a great help for keeping food
cold if the power will be.out for:
more than four hours have a
couple on hand along with frozen
gel packs. When your freezer is not
full, keep items close together -
this helps the food stay cold longer.
Digital, dial or instant-read
food thermometers and appliance
thermometers will help you know
if the food is at safe temperatures.
Keep appliance thermometers
in the refrigerator and freezer at all'
times. W\hen the po:\\% is out, an
appliance therrnometet \\ill always
indicate the temperature in the,
refrigerator and freezer no matter
how long the power has been out.
The refrigerator temperature
should be 400 F or below; the freez-
er, 0 F or lower. If you're not sure a
particular food is cold enough, take
'its temperature with a food ther-
mometer.
Before making any change to
your diet or exercise plan, consult
your doctor. This is especially
important if you are on any pre-
scription medications. Some drugs
interact badly with foods that
would otherwise be considered
"healthy."

ly. Do you plan to vote? Why or why not? What would you like to see
the new elected official do?

Susie Hull said she will vote. She said, "I
would like to see our water system fixed
so I don't have bad water. I would like to
see the elected official stay abreast of the
growth of LaBelle to make sure it doesn't
grow too quickly."
Larry Spencer said he will vote. He said, "I
would like to see the elected officials work
on growth for businesses on Hwy. 80. ,
Everything else is under control pretty well ,"^ t
other than the water, but I think they're
already working on that. I like both candi-
dates and wish they weren't running o"
against each other."

Sanjuanita Perez said, "I am a registered
Voter but usually forget to vote. However,
perhaps I will vote this year. The elected
S officials really need to focus on the kids
as far as having more after school pro-
Sgrams. The teen pregnancy and juvenile
Delinquency rate is extremely high
Because there is nothing to do here.
Bonnie Irvello said she will vote. She -
said, "I would like to see better roads -, j ,:. -
and more focus on serious things subh
as drugs instead of focusing all of our "' i W '.
attention on traffic tickets. Drugs have l
gotten worse in the six years that I've e
been here." MW,"

Cesar Fernandez said, "I'm not sure if
I'll vote or not. However, I would like to
see a place for young people to hang
out such as a bowling alley with an
arcade room and pool tables instead of
having to drive all the way over to Ft.
Myers for something to do."

"Executive Director Keral Kro-
nseder Vogt said, "One in every
ten persons is addicted to drugs
or alcohol at some time in their
lives, making substance abuse
the nation's number one health
problem and there are two jobs
available for every addictions
counselor. Now this area will
have an institute to train these
professionals in the latest and
best ways to treat and prevent
drug abuse."
Florida Addictions Institute
recognizes that most people
who want to become Certified
Addictions Professionals do not
need or want to complete a
multi-year degree program.
Many students will already have
a college degree or are already
licensed counselors, while oth-
ers are simply not interested in
expending the considerable

Yoyo man Bob Baybrook demonstrates just how it's done as

Every American k

There's nothing like a yoyo.
You'd have to look long and hard
to find an American kid who
never had one a double disk or
pure entertainment for all ages.
Did you ever know anybody
wlho wasn't captivated by a yoyoW
LaBelle kids got some hands-on
instruction at Barron Library's
summer program July 6 Wel-
come to the Land of Yo put kids
and yoyos together, along with a
master yoyo artist, Bob Baybrook.
In a matter of minutes the Bay-
brooks had LaBelle kids and a
few parents Rocking the Baby,
Walking the Dog and making clas-
sic yoyo shapes like the Florida
flag and four leaf clover.
As good as Bob is, he's not
even the expert in his family. He's

the proud dad of Jennifer Bay-
brook, 1997 National Yoyo Chai-i
pion and 1998 World Yoyo Chain
pion. Tampa area residents BoI,
and and his wife Stephaie have,.
been touring all over with their
yoyo workshop for the past 18
years. Jennifer was the lirsi
female US and World champion
and the first person ever to hold
both titles simultaneously. She
even has her own Web site:
wwvv\.jenniferbaybook.com
The great thing about yoyos.
Bob said, is that anybody can do
it. You can pick up the basics
quickly and build on it with some
practice and perseverance.

Course still building good drivers F

LaBelle High School students
once again used their summer
vacation to take advantage of
the Driver's Education course.
There were 54 students enrolled
in driver's education this year.
Ten of them made it as top driv-
ers by scoring 95 percent or
higher. The course teaches
young drivers the rules of the
road and helps prepare them for
the reality of being responsible

drivers. It is a very popular
course with new drivers and
with parents alike.
This year's best student driv-
ers, pictured with Ron Dunbar
and Pat Langford are, from left:
Kevin Rodgers, Carter Butler,
Britney Whitman, Erica Van-
.Houten, Stephanie Pack and
Rebecca Moreno.
Other students not pictured
are: Carisa Langley, Shavella

Gunsby, Blake Broom and
Rebecca Singleton.

Instructor Ron Dunbar also
presented Pat Langford a plaque
for over 30 years of Langford
Ford dealership's service in
helping driver's education by
loaning cars. Mr. Langford said
that he appreciates the opportu-
nity to help out.

GREAT YARDS ARE A GREAT INVESTMENT

You never get a second
chance to make a good first
impression. Think about
that the next time you're
driving around looking at
houses. Curb appeal is so
important, whether you're
putting your house on the
market or wanting a fresh
look for your home.
A great yard definitely
improves real estate value,
and sprucing up your yard
doesn't have to cost a for-
tune.
A recent study states that
houses with tidy gardens,
freshly mowed lawns, well-
stocked flower beds and one
or more trees will sell quick-
er and for a better price
than a comparable one with-
out the green features. If
you're selling your home,
you'll find that everything
will be coming up roses (or
pansies, or begonias.) if you
simply plant some flowers to
brighten your yard.
Spring is a great time to
plant. Gorgeous flowers in a
multitude of colors are
available at lawn and gar-
den centers this time of
year. Do a little research

and choose flowers that will
complement your home as
well as thrive in your area.
A smart way to showcase
your flowers and landscape
beds is with a great border.
Easy Gardener makes a
wide variety of edging. One
of their borders that will let
any landscape bed shine is
Emerald Edge. To install,
just hammer it into the
ground with a mallet.
Emerald Edge comes in easy
to handle four foot sections
and costs less than $1.50 per
foot in most stores.
Another attractive edging
option is Fiber Edge. It is
one of the most durable on
the market, yet it bends eas-
ily and conforms to almost
any landscape design. Made
of a strong UV- resistant
fiberglass, this innovative
edging comes in an attrac-
tive green color "that won't
rust, rot, crack or fade.
If you're opting for some-
thing ornamental, try
Garden Braid Border. The
pound-in border's braided
detail beautifully. frames
any landscape bed. Don't let
its good looks fool you; this

stylish border works hard,

keeping creeping weeds out

sturdy and maintenance-
free.
If you love the look of clay

to spend a fortune, check
out the Villa Garden Tiles.
The tiles are easy to use;
you just push them into

Locals support Smith gubernatorial campaign

A The Rod Smith for Governor
Campaign has announced its
Hendry County campaign lead-
ership. Smith's local team will be
Chaired by School Board mem-
lper Dwayne Brown, Clerk of the
Court Barbara Butler and County
commissioners W.T. Maddox,
Bo Pelham and Janet Taylor.
"Rod is the kind of leader that
gets things done. He's a problem.
solver who can work with
Republicans and Democrats
alike to do what's right" said
Clerk of the Court Barbara But-
ler. "He will do very well in our
community."
According to his supporters,
Rod Smith has a unique under-
standing of the issues affecting
-lendry County. As State Attor-
iey and State Senator, he has
served in districts representing

11 North Florida counties. A
champion of Florida's rural
counties in the Florida Senate,
Sen. Smith has served as Chair-
man of the Senate Agriculture
committee, won funding for
small county courthouses, and is
a member of the Small County
Coalition.
Smith moved from Okla-
homa to Palm Beach County at
the age of two. There he grew
up working in the fields along-
side his father, a truck farmer.
He graduated from the public
schools in Palm Beach County
and then earned a BA from the
University of Tulsa and a law
degree from the University of
Florida. He and his wife Dee Dee
have been married 23 years and
live in Alachua.

from the Gainesville area, Smith
successfully prosecuted some of
Florida's most dangerous crimi-
nals, including the Gainesville
student murderer. He also led
efforts to protect the environ-
ment by creating one of Flori-
da's first environmental crime
task force units. And he has
been a leader in strengthening
Florida's war against crime,
establishing one: of the state's
first special prosecution units
devoted exclusively to prosecut-
ing crimes against women and
children.
According to County Com-
missioner Janet Taylor, "Hendry

County wants a candidate who
shoots straight and tells you
where he stands and that can-
didate is Rod Smith."
"I am honored to have the
support of such distinguished
leaders and friendsin Hendry
County," said Sen. Smith. "I have
fought to protect the values that
Hendry County residents hold
dear. I understand their issues,
and as Governor I will work
hard to preserve their way of
life."
The Democratic primary
election will be held September

Caloosa Belle/Patty Brant
Sally and Mike Deller won this cute patriotic doll at the Sons of the Legion Independence
Day barbecue on the Fourth of July before the fireworks. They plan to give it to their grand-
daughter. That's SAL Commander Bob Mims, at right. Nine-year-old Aaliyah Lopez had a big
day too winning $113 in the 50/50.

Once again LaBelle residents enjoyed a colorful fireworks
display in celebration of American independence. A total
910 fireworks lit up the sky over the Caloosahatachee River
as hundreds watched from Barron Park after the Sons of
the Legion put on a highly successful barbecue. The SAL
hopes to build on this year's success next year.

However, the city has a number
of small projects that if complet-
ed would improve our city and
lower our liability. For example,
there are several areas of side-
walk in poor repair. Some. of our
city buildings could .use some
maintenance. For example, the
election office needs a water
meter cover and the city plant off
Belmont looks like it could use
some real maintenance.
Our city has several large
problems that are going to take
some real elbow grease to fix,
but we also have small projects
that can be completed easily and
make a real impact on our city.
The "water" facts as I know
them are we have a 30-year-old
water plant that has been
upgraded but has reached the
point where it cannot ever be
able to meet the water stan-
dards.
SThe truth is there is not going
to be any real improvement for.
three to five years, but we need
to focus on the water issue now.
We need a plan. The major road-
block to solving our water issue
is funding.
We have a few options, raise
rates and put the burden on the
people of LaBelle, raise taxes, or
annex property to expand the
tax base and spread the cost for
the plant out among a larger
population. I personally am in
favor of annexing property to
expand the tax base.
We all moved to the quaint
.town of LaBelle. We love it the

size and shape that it is. Howev-
er, the reality is we are growing.
We are part of the phenomenon
that is a rapidly growing South-
west Florida. One way or anoth-
er we are going to have to deal
with growth.
We can either plan for growth
and have that growth be gradual
and responsible or we can let the
growth happen while we
attempt to ignore it and then
have to back track a few years
down the road.
If we start planning for
growth now, we can make sure
we have the infrastructure .and
the resources to keep our 'town
,beautiful far into the future. We
have the wonderful opportunity
to control our growth and make
sure that our city grows the way
we want to see it grow. I say we
embrace this opportunity and
start planning for our inevitable
growth now.
We have a zoning plan in
place that reflects our compre-
hensive plan. I think we have
made real progress on zoning
and I am in line with the zoning
changes that have been made. I
know in recent months there has
been some uproar about the
way the zoning was handled. I
support the city implementing a
plain language announcement
to accompany legal descriptions.
I also think that if a zoning issue
seems like it will be especially
divisive we may want to consid-
er sending a postcard to resi-
dents affected by the change.
I support the limited, gradual
and responsible annexation of
the areas adjacent to our city. I
don't think we should start

annexing property all Willyy
nilly." Instead, we need to
responsibly address the annexa-
tion of more property into our
city. We need to plan for the
annexation and through the lim-
ited and gradual annexation of
surrounding property, we can
increase our tax base and spread
the cost of infrastructure out.
The areas adjacent to LaBelle
are going to grow and develop
and if we annex them, we can
control how they are developed
so our city continues to grow
and develop within the vision we
have of the future.
Every part of the prospects
facing LaBelle is exciting. Our
city is at a turning point and is on
the crux of some really dynamic
and fabulous changes. I am so
excited about working with the
other commission members to
resolve the problems and to
address the changes facing
LaBelle. I think the challenges
coming up will be exciting and
finding and implementing a
solution will be gratifying.
I personally know Bill Mad-
dox and.Darrell Harris and have
worked with both of them on
various projects. We have a good
working relationship and I think
the only way we can improve
communication is by talking to
one another and building rela-
tionships. I have noticed that
many times the County leans
toward Clewiston and gives
many of that city's projects prior-
ity. I think the only way we can
really make our voices heard is
by the concerted effort to tear
down walls and to build up
bridges of communication.

immediate, problem. This certain-
ly needs to be considered at the
City Commission level.
The water plant needs
replaced. I haven't been able to
drink the water for years. This is
an urgent need and we need to
take steps to proceed with this
project. Yes, we need to be think-
ing ahead and plan for the future
growth of the city. However, I
don't think we need to be provid-
ing water for all of Hendry Coun-
ty-
Growth will come whether.we
want it to or not as more people
move into this great state, county
and city: We can either plan for
the growth and the needs that
result or bury our heads in the
sand and let it overtake us.'I prefer
to plan strategically for the growth
and have plans in place that make
sense. Common sense should
guide us as we plan.
Zoning issues need to be care-
fully addressed and there is a
need for affordable housing. Zon-
ing needs to examine each and
every situation and do what's best
for everyone, not just certain
developers orrealtors. think that
communication needs to be
improved as well as resident
involvement in the entire process.
Not to be critical, but how many
members of the. Code Review
Board are actually residents/vot-
ers in LaBelle? We need more res-
ident participation and planning.
In principle I am not opposed
to annexation. I am, however,

specifically opposed to further
annexation until the city can take
care of the current and future resi-
dent's needs within the city. (By
future residents I am referring .to
the annexations that have already
occurred that are not developed,
i.e. Bonita Bay) Living in a city
entitles a resident to certain
expectations of services and
amenities. If the city cannot pro-
vide those services or meet those
expectations, then plans need to
be made to address these deficits.
I am a proponent of strategic
planning and wise use of land,
including "smart growth." In the
current annexations, the Depart-
ment of Community Affairs has
raised issues related to urban
sprawl. City development needs
to be compact; orderly develop-
ment. As parcels continue to be
annexed, city services will be
stretched, along with staffing and
equipment. I believe that the city
needs to work closer with the
county and develop an interlocal
annexation agreement as was
agreed to in the settlement
between the county and the city.
at the joint meeting held May 9,
2002. There were several other
items from that meeting that the
city and the county should consid-
er, including a cost analysis that
the city agreed to do to consider if
the residents south of Cowboy

Way would benefit by being
annexed into the city. To my
knowledge, that analysis was
never conducted.
The most exciting prospect the
city faces is the ability we have to
make this city what we want it to
be, what we want it to look like in
2010 and beyond, what we want
our quality of life to be like. This is
an awesome responsibility but
one that I take very seriously. It's
not a job for a part time individ-
ual. I consider it my full time voca-
tion. I believe that I am uniquely
qualified to take this belief and
vision into the future.
Communication is an area that
can always be improved, espe-
cially between the city and the
county. I believe there needs to be
a greater transparency between
the two. I think we need to get
beyond the competitive spirit that
exists and strive to work together
to achieve the most good for all
the residents of LaBelle and
Hendry County. I think we can
achieve a lot more if we would
just work together than if we con-
tinue to work apart.
I truly believe that I have, "An
eye for detail, an ear for concerns,
and a voice for equality." I look
forward to serving the residents
of LaBelle for two more years.
Please vote and make your voice
heard.
