I .,TING OF EXECUTIVE BOARD HELD IN GAINESVILLE

The Executive Board of the Florida Association of Architects of
The American Institute of Architects held its first 1951 meeting in
Gainesville during the Annual Architectural Field Day cn
January 13th. The meeting was well attended. The Minutes of the
meeting have been circulated among all the secretaries of the various
chapters and have been sent to all Directors and Vice Presidents of
the ilorida association of Architects of The American institute of
architects, as well as to Sanford W. Goin, the President himself.

IN EARLY APRIL OF 1951 THI FLORIDA LEGISLATURE 001S INTO SESbION

Following is a paragraph from Franklin S. Bunch, Chairman of our
Legislative Committee:

iThe enclosed copy of the members of the 1951 Florida
Legislature is very important and valuable to every member of
the architectural profession in our state. Do not lose it.
File it where you can place your hands on it immediately if
the occasion arises during the session of the Legislature.
Review the names on it carefully and also review the instruc-
tions contained in the paragraph herein below and assist your
Legislative Committee by following through at the proper time
with the members of the Legislature and in the manner required
by Hr. Tench. Our effectiveness in the Legislature can be
accurately measured by your effectiveness with the individual
members of the Legislature."

It is urgent that each member of the Florir'.a Associationz of Archi-
tects meet the members of the House of Representatives from his
county and the senators from his district before the Legislature
convenes and indicate to them that the architects as a profession
will be interested in several matters coming before the Legislature.

Your attention is directed to the fact that Benmont Tench, Jr.
will be in Tallahassee during the Legislative Session and can be
reached at the Cherokee Hotel.

2. COMiUNICATIONS FROM THE OCTAGON

The AIA through the JOURNAL OF THE AYMRICAN INSTITUTE OF
ARCHITECTS and the newsletter, MIEMO FROM THL' OCTAGON, has kept the
membership informed of some of the activities of the Committee on
National Defense. In addition, the FAA representative and the
chapter representatives are being supplied with additional pertinent
information and suggestions.

3. THE ARCHITECT IN CIVILIAN DEFENSE

Some architects will as in the past serve in uniform. But they
ought also to serve as a technical group in which their specialized
training and experience may be utilized appropriately.

It is desirable and essential that architects participate in the
Civilian Defense Program so that full use of their professional
talents and abilities may accrue to the greatest benefit of the
public.

Governmental agencies will issue to local authorities direc-
tives and recommendations on over-all principles and standards for
civilian defense, such as control centers, public and private
shelter designs, shelter areas, protective coverings, structural
reinforcement, plant protection, repair of damage, evacuation,
housing, and the like to be put into effect by-local authorities.

"lletin Vol. 5, No. 1 -3-
.'ebruary 7, 1951

Architects should acquaint themselves with these directives and
standards so as to be fully informed in their application when
called upon to render professional services.

At each level of organization an architect is necessary because
of his normal experiences and training in coordinating and correlat-
ing various engineering and technological planning services.

4. RECOMMENDATIONS
The Committee on National Defense urges each state association
and each chapter to offer its immediate assistance to all local
governmental agencies. This offer should not be an empty or routine
gesture of cooperation. The American Institute of Architents and
its component organizations, as a body of technicians and specialists,
has the right and duty to ask that it be consulted on any problem
of protection, construction, and reconstruction affecting our
country and the welfare of our people

The Committee on National Defense requests that each chapter
representative ask the president of the local AIA chapter to desig-
nete a chapter defense committee. This AIA chapter committee should
then be recognized by the head of the municipal government as the
official technical group to work with the city departments and
agencies.
