Viggo Adelbert Wallace was born
in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on De-
cember 26, 1915. The son of
Maximillion Wallace and Olivia
George, he was the second son of 13
children. Viggo completed elemen-
tary education at Saints Peter & Paul,
George Washington and Lincoln
schools. He graduated from Char-
lotte Amalie High School in 1938 and
was selected as high school best all
around athlete.
Viggo received his Bachelor of Sci-
ence in Biology and Physical Educa-
tion in 1945 from Hampton Institute
and did post graduate work at NY
University, University of Texas, Uni-
versity of Indiana, and Kean College
from 1951-1959. While in college, he
was a superb athlete and received var-
sity letters in football, tennis and wres-
tling. He was also the captain of box-
ing, wrestling and swimming teams;
and was the CIAA wrestling cham-
pion in 1942, 1943 and 1944.
Viggo held positions on the ath-
letic and physical education facilities
of several colleges and universities
on the mainland. He returned to the
Virgin Islands in 1955 and married
Julia Taylor Wallace in 1956. Their
union resulted in two daughters:
Anna Olivia and Julia Florencia.
Viggo was a devoted family man and
community servant. He did his best
to provide for his family, and gave
"Every work that he undertook... he did
unselfishly to the community. Viggo
was a motivating force in the VI in
terms of helping young athletes to
develop basic skills and enroll in
mainland colleges, and to further de-
velop athletic careers. He worked
with the Department of Conservation
& Recreation and retired as Physical
Education Coordinator for the Depart-
ment of Education in 1982.
He had been a member of the Na-
tional Recreation Association, Ameri-
can Association for Health, Physical
Education and Recreation, the VI Box-
ing & Wrestling Commission, Lions
Club, Hampton Alumni Association
and numerous other community or-
ganizations.
His nickname, "Brutus," was a tes-
timony not only to his aggressiveness
in sports, but encompassed his deter-
mination to persevere in any en-
deavor. This was especially obvious
in his love for horses and his tenacity
in building ... no one has been able to
break down any of his 'walls'. There
was also a gentle and patient side to
Viggo; evident as he worked with chil-
dren in the Special Olympics or taught
people (often strangers) how to swim,
or when he showed off his beloved
"Islands" to visitors time and tirt
again.
Viggo was a special man who
touched many lives. He will be
missed.

Perseverance, concentration, patience and the true meaning of friend-
ship are among the many things I learned from You. As I move forward,
they will give me the courage to meet life's challenges. Daddy, I love you

As powerful as the names which you chose for your horses: Magnifi-
cent, Passionaire, Black Diamond, Grand Admiral, and Good Friday, so
you lived your life. Although nicknamed Brutus, for your often rough
aggressive style, your passionate side, made you a Magnificent Father.
You were tough, hard, and protective like a Black Diamond. Like Grand
Admiral, you taught us all the skills you knew, and encouraged us to try
to do everything for ourselves. You were our strength and driving force.
Your death, like Good Friday's, will still guide us. Your dreams, your
love of sports and nature will continue in us towards fulfillment. We will
miss you terribly.

Over the years I have gotten to know Mr. Viggo Wallace, first as a
Father-In-Law, then as a very kind and friendly individual who always
made it fun and interesting to discuss athletic issues. I will always
remember Mr. Wallace as a true sportsman. Now that he has passed on to
join his wife, the former Mrs. Julia Wallace, a lady who's smile lives in the
hearts of many, I am certain Julia is smiling as Viggo is phasing in with
athletics on the other side. -One Love.,

my brother-in-law, Viggo, my two nieces, Anna and Julia, and also my
great nephews, Viggo always made sure we enjoyed the beauty of the
islands especially St. John and St. Thomas. We will always be grateful for

Through his words Viggo loved his roots and always spoke proudly of
his homeland: the Virgin Islands. At Hampton University he was renown
for his outstanding performances in sports--wrestling, boxing, and swim-

mentor, he had visions for his family and set about to achieve his dreams.
Wherever he went and whatever he did, he never lost his desire to help
others. Viggo at his death was a symbol of "the upward reach of live
when weariness closes in upon all endeavor." He is now at rest.

Dear Uncle Viggo ... You and Daddy were so much alike! It is ironic
that two years ago, on this date, we laid to eternal rest your loving
brother, Lupercio, at the same age of 78. You were two years apart in age,
you died two years after him, and you are laid to your eternal rest on the
same day. There were so many similarities between you both: your looks;
smile; warm, friendly, kind ways; athletic abilities; church involvement;
community spirit; strong family love, pride and commitment; genuine
concern for others; and your willingness to share your time and many

You were truly a great role model, an inspiration to many! Uncle Viggo,
today you are reunited with Daddy, Aunt Julia and all the other family
members who preceded you. The memories we cherish will always be

MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE PRESIDENT
I write to express our sorrow on the passing of a distinguished native
son,, Viggo Albert Wallace. When one reflects on the appreciation for
sports, Virgin Islanders will surely identify with Viggo Wallace. He was
unshaken in his resolve to be fit and healthy, and took the time and effort
to pass on to the youth, his verve and affection for good sportsmanship.
We will always remember him for his years of service to this community,
and for enlightening us on the benefits of physical education. On behalf of
the members and staff of the Twentieth Legislature I extend our heartfelt
condolences to the family and many friends of this "quiet giant." May his
soul rest in eternal peace.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION
The Virgin Islands has lost a dedicated public servant with the passing
of Viggo A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace served the youth of the Virgin Islands
for over a quarter of a century as a physical education coordinator in the
Department of Education and as a director in tile former Department of
Conservation and Cultural Affairs. He left an indelible mark of caring
and concern in the hearts and minds of thousands of students, coworkers
and members of the community. Even as Mr. Wallace neared his 1982
retirement date at the age of 67, he initiated projects that kept him busy as
a volunteer for many months into his retirement. Among them was the
completion of a new playground and basketball court at the Joseph Gomez
.9
Elementary School. During the 1960's and 1970's, Viggo Wallace teamed
with the late Vernon Scipio to develop a school sports program in the
Virgin Islands, with Mr. Wallace concentrating on the elementary level,
and Mr. Scipio on the secondary school level. Their teamwork began a-
legacy that led to the eventual founding of interscholastic athletic associ-
ations in both districts. A native of St. Thomas, Mr. Wallace was educated
at Hampton Institute and the University of Texas, and taught at Grambling
College in Louisiana before joining the Department of Education in 1955.
He was a true professional and valuable member of our community. We
will miss him, and always remember his contributions.

A TRIBUTE TO VIGGO A. WALLACE
As I reflect over the passing of one of my most dearest friends., the late
Viggo Wallace, I am reminded of the song writer, W.B. Stevens, who
wrote:
"When death has come and taken our loved ones
It leaves our home so lonely and drear,
Then do we wonder why others prosper,
Living so wicked year after year.
Farther along we'll know all about it
Farther along we'll understand why,
Cheer up my brother,
Live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by & by."
If any one man represents the epitome of a "Man" for all "Seasons." It
will certainly be my friend, the late Viggo Wallace. He was, indeed a great
man and true friend. Our friendship spanned over three decades.
He was first and foremost a dedicated family man who exemplified
endless love for his family without hesitation and without reservation.
He was a great man, a father, a grandfather, a faithful and loving hus-
band, a professional educator, an outstanding recreation director, a men-
tor, an intellectual and an outstanding athlete who excelled in numerous
sports. A Christian and dedicated church member and worker.
He was a lover of people especially children and youth. He loved the
great outdoors and all of its beauty. He had a tremendous sense of

humor. He was kind, warm, gentle and a wonderful person to be around
at all times.
He was an excellent role model, especially for young boys to look up to
and emulate in this community.
So, therefore, I wish to pause and pay my final respects to my friend,
my mentor and my colleague Viggo Wallace. I was very proud and
blessed to be his friend and he shall never be forgotten.
As he has passed on and is now resting in the bosom of the Creator, a
part of the brilliance of the star shinning on his family and this community
has been diminished. We are saddened by his passing. His work is done,
but he has not labored in vain.
We have been greatly inspired by his life because he has set many fine
examples for me and others to follow. Therefore, through the examples
and teaching of Viggo, let us never cease to try to make this world a better
community of friends and to help our fellow men to rise above pettiness
and narrowness of selfish lives and give ourselves in service to all man-
kind.
The late Viggo Wallace is indeed "A Man for All Seasons." Let us all be
grateful and thankful to God for allowing us to share a part of our life with
the late Viggo Wallace. May God continue to bless all of You!

A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace was an active member of the horse racing
community of St. Thomas all his life. He was very a knowledgeable horse
man who followed both local and Puerto Rican horses very closely. He
was owner and trainer of such local horses as Magnificent, Friday, Grand
Admiral, Lighting Lad, Ayuya and Pachonera. May the memory of all he
stood for to us in the racing community serve to strengthen his family and
