Abstract:
In 1895, Theodore Roosevelt was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City, where he planned to take action against the rampant graft, bribery and incompetence seen from New York’s “Finest”. However, Roosevelt would hit what he called an “ugly snag” in this office, his duty to enforce New York’s Sunday excise law, which forbade the sale of alcohol on Sundays. He chose to enforce this law due to his personal beliefs surrounding alcoholism and class, as well as his stance against “dishonest” enforcement. Most of all, Roosevelt wanted to strike against the source of the corruption, the infamous Democratic political machine, Tammany Hall. This enforcement brought scores of outcry from all walks of New York Life, especially New York’s two largest immigrant communities, Irish and German-Americans. Through newspapers and published work meant to highlight how the enforcement influenced daily life, this thesis puts into conversation the sociopolitical dynamics of Gilded Age New York City with larger arguments about government-enforced morality, immigrant identity, nativist stigma, and class patterns.
