If they become overwhelmed, they may ask the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for help. When the CAF responds to such a crisis, it is known as Operation LENTUS. The Province of British Columbia has requested in the form of Canadian Armed Forces members and aircraft. The CAF is providing air transport of personnel, supplies, and equipment into and out helicopters from 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, fon helicopters, one from 408 Tactical Helicopter Support Squadron in Cold Lake, both operating Canadian Armed Forces personnel and air assets are providing airlift to transport personnel and equipment, and will provide emergency airlift for evacuation purposes, if required. The CAF is also prepared to provide airlift to support broader evac activities, should it be required. Local Cadets tour 442 Sqn Canadian Navy pilot honoured at BC Aviation MuseumA monument to honour the last Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross, Lt Robert Hampton Gray, was unveiled and dedicated on August 8 at the BC Aviation Museum. The memorial, funded with an initial contribution from the Naval Associa and public subscriptions, is located at the entrance to the museum at the Victoria International Airport. At the outbreak of the war “Hammy†Gray, who was born in Trail, British Columbia and attended school in Nelson, was completing his studies at the University of British Columbia. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy volun teer reserve as an ordinary seaman, and after being selected for pilot train released his bomb to sink the destroyer Amakusa before his plane crashed into the bay. 12 | AUGUST 17, 2021 | TOTEM TIMES Two members of the 19 OSS Marine Sec tion represented the Oceanside Pipe Band at the third annual Campbell River High land Gathering on as part of the 54th annual Campbell Riv er Salmon Festival. PO1 Brent Marsh is the Pipe Major (lead founder of the band. He has served the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) for 34 years. S1 Edith Desjardins has served the RCN for eight years, and she is the Lead Tip (drummer) of the band. The Highland Games provided her formance. “It was daunting,†shares S1 Desjar dins. “There was lots practicing, learning, and devoting my free time to reach this goal. My bandmates devoted their person al time just to help me evolve musically.†The Oceanside Pipe Band was formed with the main goal of teaching new and longtime players all aspects of music reading and writing. “All though other bands may touch on this, we spend a great deal of time to allow our mem bers to create their own compositions,†shares PO1 Marsh. “This allows a fresh look on traditional bagpipe music.†PO1 Marsh can un needs and learning style after more than perience with various bands. “Being in the band is much like being velop friendship that you would eventu ally call family. We came together with a common interest, and as a new team, our goal was to work together to become machine. It is truly something special.†The Campbell River Highland Gathering performance for the Oceanside Pipe Band. For S1 Desjardins, the performance in the Campbell River Highland Games was secondary to the par ticipation and team building that preced ed it. “Being called to play in the games is a the culmination of a much grander ac ing together with love of the music, the band, the broth erhood. Playing was the easy part.†S1 Desjardins placed Beginner 6/8 drums. “Practicing is harder than performing, in PO1 Marsh. “We are hard on ourselves level with minimal time. On the day of the performance, at the games, your training is done. The outcome is only the result of our time sent to get to this point and nothing else can be done.†“We worked on our individual weakness es, and truly became a team,†observes S1 Desjardins. “Com ing together as one, our shared strength. We counted on each other because we needed to.†“When we entered the competition circle in front of many spec tators, it was just like we were at a normal practice,†adds PO1 Marsh. “We focused on the task at hand, and when we walked off the field, there was a great sense of accomplishment. At that particular mo ment we became a band and a family.†“That demonstrates our love for the pipes and drums, and our passion for what we do,†concludes S1 proud to be a mem ber of the Oceanside Pipe Band.†The 19 OSS Marine Section has two vessels Black Duck and Albatross that support 442 Sqn in sea survival training and training exercises with the Cormorant at sea. 19 Wing members participate in the Campbell River Highland Gathering
