Abstract:
The Bohumil Bad'ura Collection, acquired by FIU Libraries Collections in 2018, includes 4,600 images of documents from the National Archive of the Republic of Cuba gathered by Czech historian Dr. Bohumil Bad'ura (1929-2014) for his 2013 book, Paginas de la Historia del Pueblo del Caney. The town of El Caney, on the outskirts of Santiago de Cuba, was a protectorate for Native Cubans until the mid-19th Century. The collection includes a 1784 census of El Caney and thousands of surnames of French and other European citizens who lived in Cuba in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Dr. Bad'ura arrived in Havana in 1965 to research Spanish colonial efforts to counterbalance Cuba's surging African population with European immigrants, and taught a course on the work techniques of historians at the University of Oriente in Santiago from January 1966 until the summer of 1967. FIU Libraries' Special Collections and University Archives thanks Juan O. Tamayo, who received the negatives from Dr. Bad'ura's widow, Anežka Bad'urova. Tamayo then digitized the images and created the indexes used to post the collection online. ( English,Spanish )
