'Dreamscapes' is an installment of original art set to play a major role in Brooksville Main Street's Multicultur al Festival, taking place on October 7, 2023. And from now through July 31, the Dreamscapes Call to Artists encourages creatives to show us their idea of a dreamland. "Artists are asked to paint their interpretation of a dreamscape, whether this be a picture of their idea of utopia or a wild scene from their imagination. Share with us your visions of nature, humanity, reality, fantasy, and creativity," read the Dreamscapes Call to Artists. "Share your landscape of the mind! Paint us your dreamscape and give us a look into your imagination." Artists will be paid $12 per square x 15’, 6’ x 10’, and 5’ x7.’ Sketches are recommended but not required. Artists are required to use professional-grade outdoor acrylic paint. Artists will set up a table or tent at a Murals in the Park event for a meet and greet, where they may live paint or demo at their space. Artists also may sell artwork during this event and display promotional materials at no cost. The call to artists closes at 5 pm on July 31st. Jessica Knutila, Mobile Mural Co ordinator for Brooksville Main Street, stated that this particular mural theme is a dream of a concept. "I'm so glad that the design committee came up with the Dreamscapes theme because it can be open to so many interpreta tions. Artists can be literal and create picturesque landscapes or maybe have a more abstract concept in mind," she said. "Two questions that may be helpful in conceptualizing your design Where do you go in your dreams? Do you visit familiar places from your memories or do you travel to unknown lands?" Knutila also encourages artists of all backgrounds and cultural identities to share the dreams of their people. "The Dreamscapes murals will be unveiled at the Multicultural Parade in October," she said, "so maybe artists their cultural identity into their submis sion." And in addition to the mobile murals featured in this round of this popular community art project, one lucky artist will be selected to make a permanent contribution to the Brooksville land scape. "Don't forget that one muralist will be selected to create a permanent mural in Downtown Brooksville instead of a mobile mural!" said Knutila. Knutila reveals that the Mobile Mural project has succeeded, with Brooksville Main Street working with 71 artists to create 106 mobile murals and paying $45,515 to artists since the Mobile Mural Program's inception in 2020. Natalie Kahler, executive director of Brooksville Main Street, also sees the Dreamscape concept as being wide open to artistic interpretation. "I'm so glad that our design committee, and particularly Allisa Babor, came up with the Dreamscapes concept," she said. "We've already been getting a great variety of submissions. And we're not expecting a single look from the we want to know their dreams, their wishes and hopes." And in a way, Kahler emphasizes, Dreamscape artists will be feeding the dreams of hopeful creatives who submit their own designs for future Mobile Mural Call to Artists. "We'll be said. "And all proceeds will go to pay artists for future rounds of murals." Barry Meindl, Brooksville Main Street graphic designer, feels that Dreamscapes will create a stirring creative challenge for participating artists. "I'm so excited for Brooksville Main Street's Mobile Mural program to once again bring spectacular artwork to downtown!" he said. "The Dream scapes theme is going to be a fun one, giving artists a virtually blank slate to let their creativity run wild. Can't wait to see how they interpret the theme and take the artwork to yet another level this time around!" Allisa Babor, Brooksville Main Street design committee member and chairperson of the Hernando County Fine Arts Council feels that Dreamscapes will empower artists to realize their own dreams on canvas. "We invite artists to journey into their imaginations and boldly capture their unique perspectives of the world, the dream realm, and beyond,†she said. “Through this call, we celebrate the beauty of diverse visions, granting art ists the freedom to bring their visions to life." for Dreamscapes features the work of a popular artist who, among many other honors, recently scored an Award of Merit at the Hernando County Fine Arts Council Art in the Park compe tition. Justin Alsedek of Gypsea Arts' "Dorita Springs" forms the dreamy "It is 100% a dreamy, subconscious, magical, surreal landscape that perfect ly illustrates the theme," said Alsedek. "If I had time to make another one for this call, I would love it. Right up my alley!"The schedule for the Dreamscapes Mo bile Murals project is as follows: Mon, July 31 Deadline to apply at 5 PM Week of August 7 Artists pick up tarps tarps October 7 Murals in the Park Event Day Check out and apply for the Dreams capes Call to Artists at www.welovebvl. org/mm-call-to-artistsDorita Springs by Justin Alsedek Congratulations!rThomas and Josephine Maher, of Ho mosassa, will celebrate their 40th wed ding anniversary on August 27th. The theatre's performance class meets to rehearse 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class runs in 8 to 12-week periods, with 6 or 8 performances culminating each term. The Acorn Theatre produces and performs two shows each year, as well as participates in Brooksville’s annual Tree Lighting. Caitlin Frostman has appeared in Tampa Bay area pro ductions since 2013, including compensated performances in some productions. Hillsborough Community College recognized her for Outstanding Leadership in Theatre in 2021-2022. She studies theatre at HCC, with an emphasis on acting techniques based on the principles of Stanislavsky, Sanford Meisner and Eric Morris. In 2022 Caitlin traveled to New York as a student nominee attending theatre workshops with such instructors as Anthony Vincent Bova. Caitlin was part of a Hadestown musical workshop with the national touring cast of the show in 2022, where she learned about making characters realistic with music and movement. "This year, we are adding Brianna Genao to the facul ty," said Vanni. "She will be teaching our additional Tap Classes." Brianna Genao started dancing at age 5. Her mother enrolled her in a jazz class, but a tap class happening next door truly piqued her interest. “I would run to the window to watch their class. The next school year, I started tap and fell in love with it,†she said. Brianna continued dancing recreationally through ele mentary school. "In middle school, I began competing in dance," she said. “I was trained in all areas, but tap always remained my favorite.†She stopped competing in high school and participated in productions like The Nutcracker, also choreographing 42nd Street. “I’ve been on a break being an adult and raising babies," she said, "but I can not wait to get my two shoes back on!†For information about Live Oak Conservatory, go to 0270 or email Katie@liveoaktheatre.org. PAGE B 6 •• THE HERNANDO SUN • July 21-27, 2023 • hernandosun.com • CALL 352.675.NEWS Mountain right down to Table Bay, Cape Town is simply stunning,†said Joe. “It’s a fusion of cultures, cuisines, and landscapes, and we allowed two days to explore before boarding a train to take us to Pretoria — the next stage of our trip,†he said. “Cape Town reminded me so very much of San Francisco,†said Joan. Places to visit in Cape Town are far too numerous to mention, to cram in some spec tacular excursions: Bo-Kaap — the Malay Quarter; its origins date back to the 1760s when numerous leased to slaves. These people were known as Cape Malays and were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, and the rest of Africa to work. When the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, all the houses were painted bright colors by their owners as an expression of their freedom. The candy colors of their homes are a reinvention of the community as a rainbow nation and as an expression of liberation after the apartheid years. The Cape of Good Hope is majestic — it’s the southwestern tip of Africa where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean and used to be called the Cape of Storms because of the super strong winds and ocean currents. Aside from its breathtaking beau ty, the cape is rich in biodiversity, with rare species like humpback whales, dusky dolphins, and rare birds. Robben Island is a must. Aside from its wildlife and coastal beauty, this is the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. Dating even fur ther back, this place was once a leper colony and a facility for the mental ly ill in the 1800s. There are tour guides who are actually former political prisoners that will give the Apartheid era. Boulders Beach — And for some cuteness, a visit to Boulders Beach Penguin Colony will delight. PAGE B 8 •• THE HERNANDO SUN • July 21-27, 2023 • hernandosun.com • CALL 352.675.NEWS By SARAH NACHIN sarah@hernandosun.com I would imagine that directing a group of budding actors ages seven to 17, with varying experience, would be akin to herding cats. In the upcoming show “The Sponge Bob Musical,†director Angela Gluchowski does a masterful job of pull to be a combination stern drill sergeant, patient teacher, and sympathetic mother. At the rehearsal I attended last Thursday, Ms. Gluchowski handled all three roles well. plete run-through, the cast of twenty-eight did remarkably well. The show involves singing, dancing, and acting, along with physical comedy. Several of the actors had many lines to memorize, while others had to remember blocking, timing, as well as when and where to enter and exit. The students took it seriously but were having a lot of fun at the same time. Cam Kennedy has the lead role of Sponge Bob. At thirteen, Cam is mature beyond his years. He has an air of pro fessionalism and spoke his lines with few errors, and has a great singing voice. It’s not surprising since Cam has been acting for six years. He started out with Live Oak Theatre, another local theatrical troupe. Cam remarks, “I saw their production of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ I walked out of the theatre, walked up to the artistic directors, and said, ‘I’m doing this.’†He has acted at several venues with adult actors. Among the shows he’s been in are â€Into the Woods;†“A Christmas Story,†in which he played the lead; and “Newsies.†When it comes to future roles for Cam, there are two he’d like to do, both of which are in rather obscure plays. He’d like to play Orpheus in “Hadestown,†a modern-day musical based on a Greek myth. He’d also like to play Anatole in “The Great Comet of 1812,†another musical based on a segment of “War and Peace.†With his experience, love of theatre, and enthusiasm, it’s not surprising that Cam wants to pursue a career in theatre. So, start watching the Tony Awards in about ten years, and you may hear his name mentioned. Seventeen-year-old Joseph Johnson plays Patrick, Sponge Bob’s best friend. He’s been acting for two years. Joseph had an elective course in high school and chose drama, however he wasn’t really eager to act until one of his teachers talked High School was “Mama Mia.†Playing Patrick was the most enjoyable thing about being in the show because “I get to be the fool.†He got to have a solo, which stretched his skills and gave him a sense of accomplishment. Two plays that are on Joseph’s bucket list are “Fiddler On the Roof†and “Caba ret.†In both, he’d like to play the lead. Like Cam, Joseph wants to have a career in acting. From being a reluctant actor, he’s now vice-president of his school’s theatre class. Julia Arner is Sandy in the play. She’s 17 years old and has been acting since she was in sixth grade. As she explains, everone who was in theatre at her school was “cool,†and she wanted to be part of that group. “Then I realized I really liked it,†she remarks. Julia has been in a number of plays, including “The Addams Family,†“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,†and “Godspell.†Learning her lines was the most chal lenging part of the show, as is the case with most actors who have big parts. “Meeting Kevin [one of the main actors] and being able to act with my best friend, who plays Pearl, was the best thing about being in the show,†Julia states. Her dream play is “Xanadu,†and she would really like to be in that show. Another play on her bucket list is “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,†a musical comedy about a group of quirky teenagers who compete in a spelling bee. Kevin Grumbley is 17 years old and plays the part of Squidward. When he was little, his mother noticed that he was always singing or performing, so she en rolled him in dance and theatre classes. He “Ever since then, I’ve just fallen in love with the art,†Kevin remarks. Among the plays he’s been in are “Matilda,†“Shrek,†in which he played Donkey; and “Lend Me a Tenor.†The most challenging thing about “The Sponge Bob Musical†was learning to tap dance for a solo because “I am not the strongest tap dancer.†The best thing about the play was show at Stage West. As Kevin is close to graduating, he has started making plans to apply to various colleges and major in Dramatic Arts. This cation. He must record a video in which he sings two songs, does two monologues and a dance number as part of a pre-screening process. After that step, he’ll do live audi tions at whatever schools like his videos. Angela Gulchowski is the person who pulls this whole thing together. Ms. Gulchowski’s biggest challenge has been overcoming the physical limitations of their set versus a Broadway stage. For example, in portraying two of the charac ters climbing a volcano, they couldn’t use ladders suspended in the air for safety reasons. So, they had to be creative, and the audience had to use their imagination. prefers a non-musical play. One that is on her bucket list is “Almost Maine.†“It tells wonderful stories about love have a similar theme as typically the show is cast to have the same actors portray If the small portion of the show I saw last week is any indication, Ms. Gulcho wski should be in her element with any show she directs. For those of you who think “Sponge Bob Square Pants†is just a silly comedy for children and pre-adolescents, think again. The play contains satire on politics, the media, global warming and human be havior, as well as some clever puns.
