Curatorial and Collection Development Intern Proposal for a Graduate Student Internship in the Baldwin Library Emily Brooks and Suzan Alteri Project Overview: The curatorial and collection development intern will support the George A. Smathers efforts to identify and digitize toy and movable books, and to provide intellectual context and s Literature digital collection ( http://ufdc.ufl.edu/ juv) as well as document best practices for digitizing non traditional books such as moveable and pop up s. This project will identify current holdings of interactive and books in the Baldwin Library and suggest other titles for acquisition based on collect ion strengths and weaknesses. The largest part of the project will be piloting a method for digitizing non traditional book items and documenting best practices for the digitization of these unique items. This curatorial and collection management intern is proposed for fall 2017. Objectives: Identify physical holdings of interactive and movable books in the Baldwin Library of Create useful categories for distinguishing types of movable and interactive books Prioritize ti tles for digitization based on approved selection and condition criteria Determine gaps in holdings and generate list of titles to enhance collection Digitize and provide moveable images for at least 15 movable books for upload into http://ufdc.ufl.edu/juv Create library guide for digitizing non traditional books Generate subcollection and write abstract Design publicity materials to promote new subcollection Deliverables: Spreadsheet of titles for digitization b ased on approved selection and condition criteria List of titles to be added to the Baldwin Library Moving i mage and/ or video files of 15 movable books for inclusion in subcollection bcollection Library guide for digitizing non traditional books Social media blurbs and fliers to be distributed at library events, conferences, and online Resources Needed : There is no additional burden of resources that will need to be purchased for this project. The intern will use personal equipment as well as flatbed and KIC scanners available in the SASC department. The Scott Nygren Studio has all software programs requi red to complete this project. Impact: Collections (UFDC) by including video and moving image files of moveable books as well as encouraging other libraries to develop innovative practices regarding digitization of non traditional printed books. With the creation of a subcollection and targeted publicity materials,

the graduate student will increase use of these materials by highlighting technological innovations in the history of the book and the production of printed materials while encouraging scholarly and classroom use of the digitized version s The internship will have no impact on Cataloging and Discovery Services as all books targeted for digitization wi ll have full catalog records already in place. This internship is expected to have minimal impact on Digital Production Services (DPS) and Digital Services (DS) in Special and Area Studies Collections (SASC) In discussions with Chelsea Dinsmore, this wo uld be a pilot project to determine if digitization of non traditional items, such as moveable and pop up books using innovative technologies can be uploaded into UFDC. All books will be digitized in the Grand Reading Room of SASC, with moving image files collected and sent to DPS for quality control and upload. This is not to replace the current workflows for digitizing material, but to work in consort with DPS to develop a best practice for future use by that department. The intern will determine new modes of digitizing non traditional books using non personnel resources available in the libraries and will be using her own equipment plus equipment already located in SASC. While t here will be some training on the theory of metadata, t he intern will not be changing metadata in UFDC or in the Library Catalog (OPAC, ALEPH). P romotional materials will be created using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, both of which automatically generate the HTML code necessary to embed the material on a webpage. This should not require any additional assistance from IT or DPS. Benefits to Intern: The internship will teach the intern about how special collections are run on a day to day basis as well as how to plan for future directions in order for the Baldwin Library to stay relevant with researchers and scholars. In addition to learning and experimenting with digitization of movable books and promotion of digital collections, th e intern will also have an opportunity to conduct research with concrete scholarly deliverables using 3D scanning, photogrammetry, and video. The successful candidate already identified, will learn about alternate academic positions and enhance their port folio upon graduation. The intern will also suggest future projects and/or ideas to a campus wide audience, including academic and library faculty as well as other students. Benefits to UF Libraries: This internship will support initiatives in the George A. Smathers Libraries related to digitizing rare and unique materials and initiatives in transformative collaboration. The intern will also generate public ity materials to draw public attention to the UF digital collections. By creating a library guide for digitization, the graduate student will enable a faster, more efficient method for delivering open access digital content through UFDC. The Baldwin Librar y has a unique collection of moveable and pop up books that are held by a minority of institutions in the world. Since these materials are difficult to digitize and require special programs and hardware to create image and video files, the y operate outside of the normal workflows of DS in Special and Area Studies as well as DPS In creating a pilot program to develop best practices for making digital

copies of non traditional book items, it is hoped that a model will be created that can be integrated into c urrent workflows for digitization as well as make these rare and unique materials widely accessible to patrons, students, and scholars worldwide. Benefits to the University Partner: The Department of English will be able to provide a unique opportunity f or a graduate student to work hands well, this position provides the ability for a graduate to learn how to transfer their scholarship into public humanities work as wel l as apply their knowledge of book history and digital humanities and trends in research. This includes perfecting the use of advanced technologies like photogrammetry to digitize artifacts from the collection. The intern will also meet and present finding s to the Baldwin Library Scholars Council, a group of academic faculty from both inside and outside UF. This is an important networking tool as well as another opportunity to present their research and query successful scholars regarding how they conduct r esearch and access special collections materials. In addition to the short presentation to the Scholars Council, the intern will also present their scholarship on children's books and play to a campus wide audience of academic and library faculty and other students. Learning Outcomes: Intern will understand the best practices for digitizing movable books Intern will know how to create publicity materials Intern will understand the complex field of curatorship and library science Intern will learn how to plan for future projects in conjunction with outside scholars Intern will develop a unique digital humanities project for her job portfolio Internship Director: The director of the internship will be the Curator of the Baldwin Library of Historical Literature who will be responsible for monitor ing the progress of work, training, and collaboration with the in tern on collection development. It is anticipated that this internship will be a transformative collaboration in which both the intern and the curator learn from one The Internship Director hopes to learn best practices in selecting non traditional items for digitization as well as workflow issues for this project. P lan of Activities: Fall 2017 Attend a CV/resume workshop and an orientation to the Libraries (required) Learn how to properly handle materials in SASC Prepare spreadsheet of titles to be digitized Digitize and provide moving image files for 15 movable books and write abstract for subcollection Create library guide for digitizing non traditional books Design banner and publicity materials Attend the Baldwin Library Scholars Council in person meeting in fall to report on progress Present scholarship to a campus wide audience
