Abstract:
Sound ethical decision making and engagement in ethical behavior is important for any job. The financial industry is experiencing a pressing need for ethical practitioners. Scandals in the recent years have tarnished the industry and created a hostile environment. University graduates that enter roles in this industry generally have access to highly confidential material and large sums of money. Recruiting teams need to recognize ethical decision making as one of the necessary skills to be successful in a role within this industry. Those who enter the financial industry will face various pressures from within, and external to, the industry. This project explores the need and viability of including an ethics assessment during recruitment processes within the financial industry. Currently, we see discussions on ethical dilemmas and scandals as well as assessments such as the Defining Issues Test (DIT) and the Multi-Dimensional Ethics Scale (MES) being used as a way to assess ethics and ethical behavior. However, these tests are incomplete and limited because they are not directly tailored to the financial industry. It is suggested that the creation of an assessment will enable a more accurate measure of ethical decision making that can be used during the recruitment process. ( en )
