FROM THE DESK OF
The Executive Secretary-Treasurer
Chaplain (Lt. Col.) William Golder, USA
.....There is always a great amount of personal satisfaction in "putting to bed" the last news media prior to the opening of a national convention. In addition to the featured personalities with such names as Mrs.Dwight D.Eisenhower, the Honorable Donald A.Quarles, Ambassador Carlos P.Romulo, and former Congressman Brooks Hays, the Moral Leadership Workshop consisting of four significant panels, promises to set a new standard for MCA conventions.
Recognizing the one great weakness of panel discussions to be scant preparation on the part of the participants, we introduce here, the panel Director, the subject matter and some "Thought Starters". Select a panel of your own particular interest and choice, and remember the story of the lad who commiserated with the visiting preacher who, after contributing fifty cents to the donation box, the only contribution of the day, and upon learning that whatever he found in the box belonged'to him, by saying, "Preacher, if you had put more into it, you would have gotten more out of it".
COMMUNISM PANEL
Director: DR. CHARLES W. LOWRY. Represented the U.S. at the first International Convention on Peace and Christian Civilization in Florence, Italy. Widely known as author and lecturer. His books include the internationally famous "Communism and Christ" now in its fourth printing.
Thought Starters on Communism
1. Beneath the missiles and the space race a cold war. Who is really ahead?
2. Prescinding from the question on allegation of Communists in official positions in the U.S. what is the extent of their influence "unofficially".
3. Consider the charge that Communism seems to find a reception among many"intellectual" or "academic liberals". If true....why?
4. American fighting men came face to face with Communist philosophy and techniques as POW's in Korea. It has been authoratatively stated or implied that our men were unprepared philosophically, and in some instances morally.
5. An understanding of crisis (e.g.,why we patrol the skies or the seas, why we have troops stationed abroad) is essential to morale. What"party lines" have been used by Communism to reduce a feeling of crisis?
ADVERTISING PANEL
Director: MR. VANCE PACKARD. The man who made "the hidden persuaders" a household word, and whose new book "The Status Seekers" explodes the myth of America's classless society. A social critic of the first rank, Mr.Packard pioneered in alerting the American public to the techniques employed for "persuasion in depth" advertising.

-*Thought Starters on Advertising
1. Practically every medium of communication is used for some form of advertising.
2. The various norms used by Americans to gauge the "morality" of their own behavior i or "acceptability" is important. Social /pressure is largely developed through advertising.
3. Motivation Research is a technique in wide spread use by industry to-day. It calls upon some of the findings of psychology to learn "motives" behind overt actions. The theory is that some of these motives are unknown even to the individual motivated. The motivation researchers believe Vance Packard that sales may be increased by discovering the motives and then appeal to them through advertising (psychological) techniques.
4. Sexual-appetites are exploited-by some-advertisers. What impact has this upon our culture...our youth!
5. "Keeping up with the Jonses" becomes a frantic task for many the task is incited through advertising.
ENTERTAINMENT PANEL
Director: Father Gilbert Hartke,O.P. Head of the Speech and Drama Department, Catholic University, since its beginning in 1937. In the course of its existence, the Department has produced more than 158 major plays. The phenomenal success of the university theater has been reported by Time, Life,Redbook and other leading journals. Recently the President of the American Educational Theater,Father Hartke is currently serving as a member of the Executive Board of the American National Theater and Academy. He is well known as a lecturer.
Thought Starters on Entertainment
1. Impact of stage, screen, radio, TV on American culture (morality) is prodigious, for good or bad.
2. Article in Newsweek: TV Dial Anything for murder. This year the networks have decided to devote to violence an all time
-.record numberofhours-per-week, ..... Why?-...
A TV producer answers, "The reason for 0 increased violence is the high competition for ratings, so everyone is throwing in all the action and violence the screen will take. It makes ratings". 3. Mr. J. Edgar Hoover: "In the face of Father Hartke the nation's terrifying juvenile crime
wave we are threatened with a flood of movies and TV presentations which flaunt indecency and applaud lawlessness". Dr.Frederick Wertham (Psychiatrist) "Every month, every year, I've been working on this problem in clinics and private practice. Why does a child commit a violent act? Not only because of impulse but also because of rationalization to do it-- TV supplies the rationalization to do it. The non-affected TV child has compassion and an awareness of suffering; the TV affected child has a callousness, a lack of understanding. There is moral and emotional harm."

LITERATURE PANEL
Director: Mr.Charles H.Keating,Jr. A Naval Air Corps Night Fighter Pilot during World War II, Mr. Keating is President of Citizens for Decent Literature,Inc. He is a member of the United States Supreme Court and is authorized to practice before the Treasury and various other Courts and Administrative bodies. A national intercollegiate swimming champion and a member of the All American Swimming Team, Mr.Keating in 1946 was given a citation for the outstanding contribution to the University of Cincinnati for that year".
Charles H.Keating,Jr.
Thought Starters on Literature
1. Kefauver Committee indicates pornographic material business runs
into a half billion dollars annually.
2. Gathings Committee investigated and was disturbed by even subtler problems "Twilight Zone" publications, i.e., the "Cheescake" sort of
thing.
3. Increase in distribution of highly sophisticated, slick paper magazines of a sexy nature is tremendous.
4. Trend seems to be toward perversion paperbacks on homesexuality and
lesbianism extolling such relations as nobler than hetrosexual.
5. Fitch's "Decline and Fall of Sex" gives insight into boredom of excess
that leads to perversion,as does Pitirim Sorokim's "Sex Revolution in
America".
6. Something CAN be done. One major comic book publisher is quoted as
blaming "The damn cleanup" for loss of sales of questionable comics.
Readers Digest,March,1959, has an interesting "What You Can Do"
article on the subject. Both denominational and non-denominational
efforts have proved successful where tried.
